Tyms had spent time on the Dolphins’ practice squad. The contract ensures that he’ll stick in Miami through the offseason program and gives him a chance to compete for a roster spot in camp.

Tyms spent time on Miami’s practice squad in 2012 and may be headed back there. He is a 24-year-old former UDFA out of Florida A&M.

A practice squad and special teams type, Tyms caught two passes for 12 yards while dressing in seven games for the Browns last season.

It’s the second straight year he’ll miss after sitting out 2015 with a torn Achilles. The Colts signed Andre Dubose to replace Tyms.

Tyms has long flashed in offseason practices, but he’s never been able to stay healthy or translate it to real football games. He dominated in the 2014 preseason for the Patriots but ended up being inactive much of the season and missed all of last year with an Achilles’ injury. He’s competing for the No. 4 job in Indy.

Tyms was placed on I.R. last week, but his injury isn’t season ending. He could resurface as a No. 5 receiver.

The 26-year-old preseason sensation finished 2014 with five catches for 82 yards and a touchdown. The Pats will hope Tyms’ development continues in his second year with the organization. Tyms has plus size and leaping ability.

Tyms was a juggled ball away from a 6/157/2 evening. It was an impressive performance, granted one that came against second- and third-team defenders. Tyms struck up an immediate connection with No. 2/3 QB Jimmy Garoppolo, catching a 26-yard dime with time running out for the Pats’ only score. Although he’s been generating hype all camp, Tyms is facing long odds of cracking the Pats’ crowded receiver corps. He’s essentially auditioning for other teams.

Tyms was suspended back in May, but this flew under the radar because he’s obviously not a big name. He reportedly tested positive for Adderall. Tyms had a huge preseason opener, going off for a 5/119/1 line against Washington. This could actually work in his favor, as the Patriots won’t have to use a roster spot to keep him. Tyms is eligible to return in Week 5.

25-year-old Tyms was cut by the receiver-starved Browns in March. He caught two passes for 12 yards across seven games with Cleveland last season. Tyms is taking the roster spot of WR Greg Orton, who tore his Achilles’ last week.
