49ers third-year CB Chris Davis has been working as the “top” nickel corner throughout OTAs and minicamp.
Davis played 115 snaps as a rookie UDFA for the Chargers in 2014 before playing just nine with the 49ers all of last season. At 5'10/202, he has good size and was a three-year starter in college at Auburn. Tramaine Brock, Jimmie Ward, and Davis have been coach Chip Kelly’s top three corners this spring.

49ers CB Chris Davis is done for the year with a torn ACL.
Davis was San Francisco’s backup nickel corner behind Jimmie Ward.
  • FA Defensive Back #43
49ers CB Chris Davis left Thursday’s game against the Cardinals with a knee injury, and will not return.
Primarily a special teamer, Davis lost a fumble on a kick return before departing. He had to be carted to the locker room.

Chargers signed Auburn CB Chris Davis.
Davis (5-foot-9 7/8, 202) was a three-year starter for the Tigers, playing boundary corner where he was forced to tackle and often match up with No. 1 receivers. He also led the nation in punt return average (18.7 yards) as a senior. Davis’ forty time at Auburn’s Pro Day was a middling 4.55, but he displayed explosive athleticism with a 40 1/2-inch vertical and 10-foot-4 broad jump. Davis is capable of contributing on special teams right away, and could develop into a sub-package corner or eventual No. 2. It’s a savvy pickup by cornerback-needy San Diego.
