Another Marve -- this one Vandy’s -- goes down with an injury

It’s not been a good year for the knees of collegiate football players who carry around the Marve surname.

Purdue quarterback Robert Marve suffered a season-ending ACL tear late last month. Now, Vanderbilt’s version is out with an injury, albeit not nearly as severe as the Boilermaker.

According to the Tennessean, head coach Robbie Caldwell said linebacker Vanderbilt Chris Marve will likely miss at least this weekend’s game with Eastern Michigan. Marve, who’s been described as the quarterback of the Commodores’ defense, suffered a torn meniscus during the loss to UConn -- Caldwell’s description of the 40-21 beating? “They put something on us Ajax wouldn’t take off” -- and will likely undergo an arthroscopic procedure Wednesday.

“They decided to do an MRI and found out there’s a little tear in there,” Caldwell said. “It’s one that he might can play with if it doesn’t start floating around and lock up. But chances are it probably needs to be cleaned out.

“We’ll probably be without Chris Marve.”

Marve will attempt to practice Tuesday; if he can make it through with a minimum amount of pain or discomfort, the procedure on his knee would likely be delayed. But, obviously, the Commodores are not counting on their defensive leader to be available for the non-conference game.
