An otherwise disappointing season for Boston College has at least one bright spot. Linebacker Luke Kuechly was the recipient of the Butkus Award, given annually to college football’s best linebacker.
“I used to watch so much football growing up and when they’d talk about great players they would always talk about Dick Butkus,” Kuechly said. “Just being mentioned along with those (past winners) and winning an award named after a guy like Dick Butkus is great.”
It’s been a great year for Kuechly, who was also named the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Defensive Player of the Year.
“As a kid, I idolized Dick Butkus. He was the ideal linebacker,” BC coach Frank Spaziani told Kuechly and the crowd at BC’s football banquet. “You’re the closest thing to Dick Butkus that I’ve seen.”
