Thirty years after his own Heisman Trophy ceremony, former Oklahoma running back Billy Sims detracted from the Heisman ceremony of Sooners quarterback Sam Bradford by repeatedly shouting “Boomer!” in an attempt to get a popular Oklahoma cheer started. Now Sims is apologizing."I’ve been getting some bad press,” Sims told the Tulsa World on Monday. “I apologize to the Bradford family and the Heisman Trust if I crossed a boundary. But, there’s no way I’d try to upstage your son’s day. I love the university so much. I try to be a spokesman for them. And I will continue to be myself and let people know about the great state of Oklahoma. And I will never, ever stop saying ‘Boomer Sooner,’ regardless of who don’t like it."The Heisman Trophy ceremony has always been a formal affair, but Sims was whooping and hollering in a manner more fitting for a pep rally. But Bradford said he didn’t mind."I didn’t feel like he took anything in any way away from me,” Bradford said. “I think he made my moment even more special by sharing the traditions of the university with me as I accepted the award. So I had absolutely no problem whatsoever with Billy yelling ‘Boomer.’ “If Bradford didn’t mind, maybe the rest of us shouldn’t either. But I still hope that if another Oklahoma player wins the Heisman, Sims stands and applauds -- and holds off on the shouting.
