Over the last few days, Charley Molnar’s name has been connected with the Temple head coaching job vacated by new Miami head coach Al Golden. Tom Dienart of Rivals.com tweeted earlier in the week that Molnar interviewed for the job, but now David Jones of the Patriot-News is reporting that while Molnar is out of the running, another former Irish coach is still in contention.
That’s right, Bob Davie might be putting down the microphone and getting back into coaching. He is among the finalists in contention along with former Florida offensive coordinator (and former Irish assistant) Steve Addazio, as well as Penn State defensive coordinator Tom Bradley, according to the report.
Davie hasn’t coached a football game since leaving Notre Dame nine years ago and has worked mostly for ESPN since, calling football games for the network. Addazio’s joined Urban Meyer in Florida after working with him at Notre Dame and had been with Meyer since 2005. Recent reports have him joining Mack Brown’s Texas staff as the offensive line coach, but that role could be short-lived if he takes the head job at Temple -- a great job, but a far cry from the head coaching spot at Florida that Addazio almost inherited from Meyer last season.
Perhaps the best fit for the Temple job may be Bradley, who many assumed would be the heir apparent to 84-year-old Penn State head coach Joe Paterno.
Still, the news that Davie is a finalist for a head coaching job after all but walking away from the profession is a testament to the polish that got Davie the Notre Dame job in the first place. Temple’s decision is expected to be announced imminently.
UPDATE -- Pete Thamel of the New York Times reports that Steve Addazio has accepted the Temple head coaching job.
