At the time, it was thought that Kim Royston would miss a significant amount of the 2010 season -- if not the entire year -- after breaking both bones in his lower left leg during spring practice.
Three months later, it was reported that not only would Royston be ready for the start of the regular season, but that he would be a participant in a limited capacity at the start of summer camp.
While the target date of Sept. 4 might still be hit, Royston will have to overcome another hurdle to make it happen.
Speaking at a kickoff luncheon Wednesday afternoon, head coach Tim Brewster revealed that Royston was undergoing surgery today to help relieve pain that’s been bothering the defensive back throughout camp.
“He is presently in surgery,” Brewster said according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. “Today they’re taking a little screw out of his leg. They think it will really help him as far as the pain is concerned.”
After suffering the injury in mid-April, Royston underwent two surgical procedures and had a titanium rod inserted to stabilize the break.
Royston started all 13 games for the Gophers in 2009, and the veteran remains an important piece of Brewster’s defensive puzzle. The coach would not guarantee Royston’s availability for the opener against Middle Tennessee State, he said the DB could “possibly be ready.”
