Illini D-Lineman Jailed For At Least A Month

As part of an agreement worked out between his attorney and prosecutors, Illinois defensive lineman Josh Brent was sentenced to, among other things, 60 days in jail for a DUI conviction, the Champaign News-Gazette is reporting.Brent was initially charged with a felony DUI stemming from a February traffic stop because he was driving on a suspended license, but the charge was reduced to a misdemeanor as part of the agreement. In addition to the jail time, Brent was given two years probation, 200 hours of community service and a $1,000 fine. While Brent was sentenced to 60 days, good behavior could cut that time in half. Brent began serving his jail time on June 2."He was totally ready to take these consequences, which I think a lot of people would have balked at,” Brent’s attorney, Tony Novak, told the paper earlier today. “He’s sitting in the county jail right now and he has to do a month of real time in there. He accepted the responsibility, accepted the consequences without any hesitation. He understood what he had to do and he’s doing it."He’s my client, but I can also say he’s a great guy. I expect he’s going to be an asset to the UI. There’s no question in my mind that he deserves a second chance there."The person responsible for providing that second chance, head coach Ron Zook, has publicly stated that he will not make a decision on Brent’s future until the legal system has run its course. At the time of his arrest, Brent was suspended indefinitely.
