Irish CB Nick Watkins undergoes surgery for fractured humerus

While the latest news involving a member of the Notre Dame football team isn’t exactly positive, there is some sunshine amidst the injury clouds.

The Irish announced Sunday afternoon that Nick Watkins underwent surgery Saturday night to repair a fractured left humerus. The cornerback sustained the injury during a spring practice session earlier in the day.

As a result of the injury and subsequent medical procedure, Watkins will miss the remainder of spring practice. However, he should be available to participate in summer workouts beginning in a couple of months.

Watkins played in 11 games, mainly on special teams, as a true freshman in 2014 and then played in every game last season. Because of an injury to the starter, Watkins started the Fiesta Bowl loss to Ohio State. As noted by our own JJ Stankevitz for his day job, Watkins will compete with Devin Butler, Shaun Crawford and Nick Coleman for a starting spot opposite Cole Luke at cornerback this year.
