Most Notre Dame fans would have taken 4-1 going into the USC game this offseason. Yet how the Irish have gotten to this point may be a largest cause for concern. If you’d have told people that Jimmy Clausen would be the nation’s highest rated quarterback, even with sophomore wide receiver Michael Floyd out for much of the season, they’d be shocked. But even more shocking is the ineptitude of the Irish defense.
When Charlie Weis made the switch from Corwin Brown as defensive playcaller to Jon Tenuta, many thought the switch to Tenuta’s high pressure 4-3 scheme would ramp up the already improved defensive attack. Yet the results have been anything but successful, with the defense holding Notre Dame back the past four games.
