Next weekend will mark the final full month of the college football regular season. Hard to believe, right? Almost equally difficult to comprehend at the beginning of the season was that Kansas State would be in a position to compete for a BCS championship game. Yet after a 55-24 win over No. 15 Texas Tech, that’s exactly what the fourth-ranked Snydercats are in position to do.
All that stands between K-State and a Big 12 championship -- it would be the Wildcats’ first since 2003 -- are four more games against Oklahoma State, TCU, Baylor and Texas. Even if KSU dropped one of those games, it would still hold a tiebreaker over Oklahoma if the Sooners win out.
But I’m getting ahead of myself and probably jinxing Kansas State in the process. Focusing on right here, right now, the Wildcats continue to play as one of the most complete teams in the country with quality resume wins. Collin Klein is still asserting himself as the Heisman frontrunner, accounting for over 300 yards of total offense and four touchdowns. K-State as a whole plays balanced on offense, and solid defense and special teams.
Some might call that old school. I call it being a hipster. Either way, Bill Snyder coached the fundamentals before it was cool and now he’s bringing it back. As a result, Kansas State has been one of the most dominating teams week in and week out this season along with top-ranked Alabama and No. 2 Oregon.
Depending on what happens tonight between Notre Dame and Oklahoma tonight, K-State and Oregon could be in a heat for that No. 2 spot in the BCS. Of course, that’s assuming Alabama continues on its winning ways, and assuming is a dangerous thing.
Once again, I need to pull myself back in and simply state that K-State has been one of the most impressive teams of 2012. If a BCS championship game appearance is in this program’s not-so-distant future, the Wildcats will have earned it without question.
