Playing an outstanding all-around game in a hostile environment, the LSU Tigers won at Auburn tonight, making a strong case that they should be the No. 1 team in the country. The defending champs struggled early and were down 14-3 at halftime, but they showed tremendous resilience, and quarterback Jarrett Lee rebounded from a terrible first half to lead LSU on four long scoring drives in the second. LSU’s other quarterback, Andrew Hatch, made a couple of impressive runs but went just 2-of-6 through the air before being knocked out of the game with a concussion. LSU running back Charles Scott was great, running for 132 yards on 21 carries, and LSU’s defense was outstanding in the second half.Lee hit Brandon LaFell on an 18-yard touchdown pass with 1:03 left to seal the win and make LSU the favorite to win the SEC West. Auburn falls to 3-1 and will fall out of the Top 10, but they shouldn’t fall too far: They’re a good football team, they just got beaten by a better team today. And now that we’ve seen just how good the defending national champions are, it raises the question: Why shouldn’t LSU be No. 1? They’ve got as good a case as anyone.
