Wetherholt underwent imaging Friday that came back clean after he missed two games with groin soreness, which qualifies as a positive development for the Cardinals and fantasy managers. The 23-year-old rookie appears likely to return in the near future, possibly as soon as Sunday’s series finale at Busch Stadium. Fellow rookie Bryan Torres draws another start at the keystone with Masyn Winn moving up to the leadoff spot.
  • MIN 3rd Baseman #23
Lewis returns to the big leagues after nearly a month at Triple-A, where he tore the cover off the ball, hitting .333 (20-for-60) with 10 homers across 15 games. The gap between Triple-A and the big leagues feels wider than it has in recent memory, which makes projecting immediate success for Lewis a challenge as he returns to the majors. He’s clearly regained some confidence at the plate, which is an important variable. He’s expected to see time at third base, first base and DH moving forward. At a minimum, Lewis is worthy of a speculative add in deeper mixed leagues on the chance he can translate his strong Triple-A run into sustained success at the highest level.
  • SEA Starting Pitcher
This is getting ridiculous. Anderson lowered his ERA to a microscopic 1.29 mark across 49 innings over 10 starts this season by allowing just one baserunner and needing just 73 pitches (47 strikes) to navigate five nearly-perfect frames. He posted nine strikeouts for the third time in his last five starts. The 21-year-old southpaw, who was selected third overall in last year’s MLB Draft, is on the fast track to Seattle and figures to get his opportunity later this summer, especially if the club is in contention for a playoff spot. His arrival doesn’t feel imminent, but the Mariners might not be able to hold him off too much longer if he keeps this up.
  • Culpepper’s latest homer was a 395-foot opposite-field shot to right-center that extended his hitting streak to 12 games. Minnesota has ostensibly cleared the runway for him to arrive in the majors as their shortstop of the present and future by moving Brooks Lee over to third base. The 23-year-old former first-round pick is hitting .467 (7-for-15) with two homers and one steal in four games since the start of June. He’s slashing .270/.374/.500 with 14 round-trippers and 13 thefts across 55 games overall. Needless to say, he’s one of the more intriguing stash candidates in the minors for fantasy managers given his power/speed combo and proximity to the big leagues.
  • KC 3rd Baseman #11
Garcia came off the bench to deliver a run-scoring ground out in the ninth inning of Friday’s contest. The 26-year-old has been held out of Kansas City’s lineup for six consecutive games with a right hamstring strain. It’s baffling why the Royals opted against putting Garcia on the injured list after he suffered the injury last weekend. It remains unclear whether he’ll return to the lineup this weekend, but the fact that he was available off the bench during Friday’s series opener seems to indicate that he’s trending in the right direction. It’s undoubtedly a frustrating situation for fantasy managers.
  • TOR Starting Pitcher #31
Scherzer struck out five and averaged a solid 93.4 mph on his four-seam fastball in his latest rehab start. He allowed five hits, including one homer, during this outing on an 86-degree evening at Triple-A Worcester’s hitter-friendly Polar Park. The 41-year-old veteran increased his pitch count to 73 (44 strikes) and should be ready to jump back into Toronto’s rotation next week. He’s been working his way back from a forearm issue since late April.
  • MIA Starting Pitcher
White is scheduled to return in 12-16 weeks, which ostensibly rules out any possibility of him pitching again this season. The 21-year-old southpaw is universally-regarded as one of the top pitching prospects in baseball and appeared to be on the verge of reaching Miami after posting a 4.01 ERA and 35/15 K/BB ratio across 24 2/3 innings across seven starts for Triple-A Jacksonville this season. Shoulder issues are complicated matters, but all signs point to White being a full-go by spring training following a relatively normal offseason. It’s a significant hit to his dynasty stock and eliminates any chance that he reaches the big leagues this season.
  • LAD Starting Pitcher #11
Sasaki finally had his best stuff on display on Friday, holding the Angels scoreless over seven innings. He allowed just two hits and two walks while generating an impressive 17 whiffs to collect 10 strikeouts. It was by far the best regular-season start of Sasaki’s career. The 24-year-old right-hander seems to be putting things together, rewarding the Dodgers’ faith in him with a 1.48 ERA over his last four starts. Sasaki will take a 4.03 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, and a 60/21 K/BB ratio across 58 innings into a start against the White Sox in Chicago next Friday.
  • NYM Starting Pitcher #45
Scott was outstanding on Friday, holding the Padres scoreless into the sixth. He scattered three hits and two walks, striking out three batters before leaving with two outs in the sixth at 98 pitches. The 26-year-old right-hander ends the day with a 2.50 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and a 41/18 K/BB ratio across 36 innings. Scott will look to keep things rolling in a start against the Cardinals in New York on Thursday.
  • WSH 1st Baseman #2
García got the scoring started with a two-run homer off Merrill Kelly in the first inning. With the bases loaded in the sixth, he completely blew the game open with a grand slam off Philip Abner, giving him a team-high six RBI in the blowout win. The two homers give García seven on the season while hitting .263/.291/.454 with 23 runs scored and 37 RBI across 203 plate appearances.
