The North Carolina Tar Heels and TCU Horned Frogs kickoff the 2026 college football season at a neutral site contest in Dublin, Ireland. It’s year number two under Bill Belichick after a dismal 4-8 debut season, while TCU capped off its 9-4 year with a 30-27 thrilling OT win against USC.
These teams met last season in Chapel Hill and TCU routed the Tar Heels, 48-14. It was the Horned Frogs’ biggest win of the season. TCU won its only neutral site game last year versus USC and the year prior over Louisiana. TCU will have a new look offense behind Jaden Craig at quarterback (Harvard transfer) following Josh Hoover‘s departure (Indiana).
North Carolina added its own quarterback, Billy Edwards Jr., who will be at his third school in three years. Despite moving around, this is an upgrade for UNC and in the second season under Belichick, it’s obvious he hit the transfer portal hard. UNC added 31 new players, which all should have an opportunity to play based on last year’s results. Anything less than a bowl game will be a deflating season for the Tar Heels.

The North Carolina Tar Heels Offense
North Carolina will look to put behind Bill Belichick‘s first year with the Tar Heels. Belichick walked into a team that was mostly already formed under previous management, so this is the first true offseason that he can sign players. After a 4-8 (2-6) season, UNC revamped its team in the portal starting at quarterback. Billy Edwards Jr. will start under center and in 2024 with Maryland, he started the season with seven-straight games of at least 250 passing yards and five-consecutive with two or more touchdowns. UNC’s season-high for passing yards last year was 216.
North Carolina Player to Watch on Offense: QB Billy Edwards Jr.
Billy Edwards Jr. started two games at Wisconsin in 2025, but both outings were cut short due to injury. However, had a strong 2024 with Maryland. In 2024, Edwards finished with 15 passing touchdowns and seven rushing scores to go along with 2,881 passing yards and a 65% completion rate. In 2025, Edwards appeared in two games. He was injured in the season-opener versus Miami (OH) and came back against Maryland before injuring himself for the rest of the season. Edwards has 10 games with a rushing score in his career and two double-digit rushing touchdown games (three being a career-high). While North Carolina couldn’t get worse at quarterback after last season, but this is easily a major upgrade for the Tar Heels.
The North Carolina Tar Heels Defense
Last year’s Tar Heels defense kept this team in a few games despite losing efforts. UNC held six teams to 21 or fewer points and five of those to 17 or less. On third downs, UNC’s defense was 102nd with a 42.4-percent conversion allowed rate. The Tar Heels have transfers from Penn State, Syracuse, and Richmond that could start and offer Belichick’s unit more experience than the group he started with in 2025.
North Carolina Player to Watch on Defense: Donovan Hoilette Jr.
Donovan Hoilette transfers in from Richmond with 6.5 sacks last season and 43 total tackles on the defensive line. Hoilette and Richmond played UNC in that game, so it’s safe to say Belichick took tabs on Hoillette and some of his teammates. At 6-foot-4 and 245 lbs, the senior will be one of the quicker lineman for the Tar Heels, which is something they want to continue building on after 32 sacks in 12 games (T-20th-most).

The TCU Horned Frogs Offense
TCU moved on from Josh Hoover (Indiana) and will roll with Jaden Craig who spent the past three years at Harvard and two as a starter. Craig will have an offensive line that Sonny Dykes believes will be the best offensive line he’s had in five years at TCU. The line has a combined 95 starts and added two transfers to replace the two lineman that left. TCU will rely on transfers to step up at the running back and receiver positions. Kevorian Barnes (97 att, 443 yards, 3 TDs) was an impact player when healthy and Eric McCallister was outstanding (72 rec, 1,189 yards, 10 TDs). Replacing those two will be a challenge, but having a solid line and a veteran quarterback puts this unit in a good place as they try to repeat on 30.7 points per game.
TCU Player To Watch on Offense: Jordan Dwyer, WR
With McCallister gone, Jordan Dwyer takes over as the No. 1 for TCU. Dwyer posted 54 catches for 730 yards and seven touchdowns in his first season with TCU. Dwyer was a former Idaho Vandals where he recorded 1,192 yards and 12 touchdowns on 78 catches in 2024. Against North Carolina, Dwyer opened the season with nine receptions for 136 yards and a touchdown. He capped off his season with two touchdowns on three catches for 84 yards against Cincinnati. He posted three 100-yard performances and scored in six separate games in 2025.
The TCU Horned Frogs Defense
TCU’s defense brings back eight of the top 14 tacklers from last year and multiple playmakers to build off a 9-4 season. TCU was very different in wins compared to losses last year.
In four losses, TCU allowed 33.0 points per game and in nine wins, the Horned Frogs permitted 21.8, including 21 or less points in five of 13 games (17 or less in three games). TCU has a bye week after North Carolina before hosting Grambling State (FCS). TCU beat Abilene Christian (FCS), 42-21 after throbbing North Carolina, 48-14.
TCU Player to Watch on Defense: Jamel Johnson, DB
Last season, Jamel Johnson started the year with seven tackles against North Carolina. He finished the year with 96 total tackles, ranking second on the team and 60 solo tackles, tied for first. Johnson also grabbed a team-high five interceptions, including a career-high two picks against SMU. Entering his senior season, Johnson is the leader of the secondary and defense.
