As an Illinois grad I wasn’t too pleased with Missouri’s 52-42 win over my alma mater last night, but as an (allegedly) impartial observer, I must say that Jeremy Maclin is an amazing football player. And yes, Maclin, Missouri’s all-purpose offensive threat, had just four catches for 31 yards and three carries for two yards. He really didn’t have that much of an impact on offense, which says good things about Illinois cornerback Vontae Davis. But on special teams, Maclin is simply amazing. He had a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown that forced Illinois to squib its kickoffs for much of the rest of the game, and he also had a 46-yard punt return. There was plenty of speed on the field with both teams, but Maclin has another gear. He’s incredible with the ball in his hands, and he’s not going to have many more games in which he has just 34 yards from scrimmage.Maclin suffered an injury late in the game, and it’s not clear the extent of the injury or whether it will hobble him for long. But if he’s healthy, I think Maclin may be a stronger Heisman Trophy candidate than his teammate, Chase Daniel. Maclin is special.
