Maryland readmits RB Wes Brown to school

Wes Brown‘s long road back to Maryland has taken yet another step toward achieving that goal.

Brown’s attorney, Jason Shapiro, confirmed to the Washington Post late Wednesday night that the running back has been readmitted to the university and will enroll in classes for the spring semester. Allowing Brown back in school earlier than expected, the paper writes, came after the player completed “several university-imposed benchmarks — like community service, attending an ethics class and writing an essay — in order to lessen his suspension to a single semester.”

Brown had been suspended from the university in early August of last year following a run-in with Baltimore police. From CFT at the time:

Brown was originally charged with felony wiretapping, second-degree assault and theft of less than $1,000 early last month when police approached him about a non-fatal shooting in Baltimore. Police wanted to question Brown, considered a person of interest in the case, when the running back allegedly shoved a detective and took off on foot. He reportedly then used a stolen cell phone to record his interaction with police. Brown’s attorney maintains that his client was not involved in the Baltimore shooting, though it had been reported that Brown’s vehicle was involved in some way.

All three charges Brown had been facing were ultimately dropped.

Being readmitted also clears the way for Brown’s return to the football team. As a true freshman in 2012, Brown finished second on the team in rushing with 382 yards.

Brown will have three years of eligibility remaining beginning in 2014, with 2013 being considered a redshirt season. For what it’s worth, the football program has yet to comment on Brown’s status moving forward.
