Mike Leach calls ’14 recruiting class “best I’ve had” at WSU

While the high-profile teams continue to stockpile the high-profile talent, coaches who are used to doing more with less are still plugging away on the recruiting trail.

Consider Washington State’s Mike Leach, who called the class he signed on Wednesday the “best I’ve had” as the Cougars coach.

Many might scoff at such a claim. After all, Rivals.com rated WSU’s class 71st in the country.

But keep in mind that something like 2,400 players will be signing letters of intent during this recruiting cycle. The recruiting services only look closely at 300 or so players, mostly due to lack of resources. That leaves a bunch of talented prospects floating around for those coaches who have an eye for finding them. Leach didn’t build a top 10 team at Texas Tech a few years back by signing a bunch of big name players. He did his homework and went out and got players who fit his system.

It appears he’s on his way to doing the same in The Palouse.
