MUMME RESURRECTING COACHING CAREER IN D-III

You have to hand it to Hal Mumme for not allowing a little thing like prostate cancer stand in the way of resuming his coaching career.A little over three months after being diagnosed with the disease, the colorful and controversial former Kentucky and New Mexico State head coach has been hired to fill the same post at Div. III McMurry University in Abilene, Texas.”Hal Mumme‘s track record of turning struggling football programs around was a strong factor in our hiring decision,” McMurry President Dr. John Russell said. “He is a Texas native with strong ties all over the state as well as throughout the nation. We feel his hiring rejuvenates the McMurry football program."Mumme was fired by NMSU following the 2008 season after going 3-9, his fourth straight sub-.500 record at the school.Much like his exit from Kentucky was marred by scandal -- recruiting issues that left the Wildcats on probation -- Mumme didn’t leave NMSU with his reputation unscathed.Three former NMSU players -- all Muslims -- sued the university and Mumme in 2006, alleging they were dismissed from the team because of their religious beliefs. The university ultimately paid $165,000 to settle the suit.
