OL Thomas Ashcraft moves on from Texas to SMU

In early January it was announced that Thomas Ashcraft was one of three Texas football players giving up their final seasons of collegiate eligibility.

Instead of giving up, however, the offensive lineman has decided to head up I-35 North about 200 miles to continue his playing career.

SMU announced via a press release Tuesday that Ashcraft (pictured, No. 79) has enrolled at the school and will be eligible to play during the 2013 season. Ashcraft received his degree in corporate communications from UT in December, meaning the player won’t have to sit out the standard transfer season.

“We think Thomas can make an immediate impact for us,” said Mustangs head coach June Jones in a statement. “We’re happy he’s chosen SMU and look forward to seeing him in an SMU uniform this fall.”

Despite being a four-star member of UT’s 2009 recruiting class, Ashcraft did not start any of the 35 games in which he played over the past three years.
