Add another name to the Vanderbilt coaching search.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com, Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton has emerged as a candidate to replace James Franklin as the Commodores’ head coach.
Hamilton is just 39 and has one season under his belt with the Colts. Before that, he spent three seasons as the offensive coordinator for Stanford.
If the report is true, it’s easy to see the attraction on Vanderbilt’s part. After all, Hamilton coached at an elite academic institution and is familiar with the challenges of recruiting and scouting in that setting.
It also makes sense when you consider that one of the other names being bandied about is Stanford defensive coordinator Derek Mason, who coached with Hamilton under both Jim Harbaugh and David Shaw.
Both Hamilton and Mason would fit the bill if having experience at an elite school is what Vandy is looking for.
