Report: Mustain Cleared Academically

The Los Angeles Times is reporting that USC quarterback Mitch Mustain has been cleared to play football in the upcoming season. Last week, Pete Carroll confirmed rumors that Mustain was dealing with academic issues that put his athletic eligibility in doubt.

“It’s been resolved,” Carroll said.

While Mustain is currently listed as the #3 quarterback on the depth chart, it’ll be interesting if Carroll allows the #2 quarterback, true freshman Matt Barkley to burn a year of eligibility in a mop-up role behind starterAaron Corp.

While many have already predicted that Barkley will be the #1 pick in the NFL draft after three seasons, Carroll would like the flexibility of having a redshirt year available, and he has a talented backup in Mustain if something happens to Corp.
