Steele Jantz picked as Cyclones starter at QB

And, yes, that’s the real name of a real person. We think.

Anyway, one of the biggest question marks for Iowa State heading into summer camp was just who would replace Austen Arnaud as the Cyclones’ starting quarterback.

Saturday, that question was answered. Whether it’s the right answer, of course, remains to be seen.

Head coach Paul Rhoades announced yesterday that Steele Jantz has won the starting job following a camp-long battle with Jerome Tiller and Jared Barnett. Based on his experience at the Div. 1-A level, it was believed Tiller may have had the inside track on the job. The QB, however, was ruled academically ineligible, effectively handing the job to Steele.

“Steele emerged from a group of three quarterbacks, as you know, by displaying the three qualities we were looking for most consistently. That’s decision-making. That’s throwing accuracy and that’s getting things done with his feet,” Rhoads said following the scrimmage Saturday.

“He took off and ran this fall camp when he should have. In the springtime, he didn’t do that. He threw the ball on time. He threw a lot of good balls (Saturday) into crowds — not balls that concern me because they went into crowds. He’s making better decisions at the line of scrimmage, which to operate this offense, you have to do.”

Last season, Jantz was a starter at the City College of San Francisco.
