Texas booster blasts Strong hire

Charlie Strong was hired by Texas on Monday to mostly positive reviews, but at least one Longhorn money man is not happy about the situation.

Texas booster Red McCombs called the Strong hiring a “kick in the face” during a radio interview and blasted the process taken by athletic director Steve Patterson.

“I think the whole thing is a bit sideways,” McCombs said during the radio interview. “I don’t have any doubt that Charlie is a fine coach. I think he would make a great position coach, maybe a coordinator.”

Of course, McCombs is a football expert, which is why he publicly advocated for the hiring of the great White Whale of college coaching searches, John Gruden. Somebody clue this man in, please.

McCombs also stated his desire to wait until at least mid-January to make the hire, seemingly unaware of recruiting deadlines that will need to be met by the new coaching staff.

While there are certainly valid criticisms to be made of the Strong hiring, but perhaps McCombs should spend a little less time flying off the handle and a little more time doing his homework.
