Texas Tech QB Baker Mayfield’s injury is not season-ending

The injury to Texas Tech quarterback Baker Mayfield’s knee caused no structural damage and should not end his season, Red Raiders coach Kliff Kingsbury said on Monday.

The freshman got hurt in the third quarter of Tech’s 54-16 win over Kansas this past Saturday. He was helped off the field by his teammates and then later went to the locker room on crutches.

Kingsbury isn’t sure whether Mayfield will start or play this week against Iowa State.

Mayfield was having a nice game before getting hurt, having thrown for 368 yards and a touchdown. Davis Webb came in and took over for Mayfield and will likely get the bulk of reps on Saturday.

Webb has 550 yards passing in four games this year and should be a more-than-capable replacement.
