Top Cal recruit Chris Martin transferring to Florida

When Chris Martin announced Tuesday that he was leaving Cal before ever playing a down for the school, he said in a statement that he “needed to venture away from [his Bay-area] home” and “leave many of the distractions” behind.

Based on his choice of schools, he wasn’t joking about the need to venture away as he’s gone just about as far as you can go in the opposite direction.

According to a rather cryptic posting on his Facebook page by way of the Orlando Sentinel, Martin has decided to transfer to Florida and play for the Gators.

“I would like to thank everyone who has been supportive of me through my crazy mental episodes. A special thank you to my mother and father who have supported me no matter what. I love you both. God has granted me a second chance. A chance I cannot mess up. With that said. Go Gators. Thank You to everyone and all the coaches who showed their interest in me.”

As Martin had already enrolled for summer classes at Cal, his status for the 2010 season remains unknown.

What is known, however, is that Florida will be getting, at least on paper, one hellacious prospect at some point in time.

The 6-4, 240-pounder was given a five-star rating by as a member of Cal’s 2010 recruiting class, and was the recruiting services No. 2 defensive end in the country and the No. 18 player overall.
