UF arrest history, shoe on table sent recruit from Gators to Vols

Yes, you read that headline correctly.

In a fascinating little piece of reporting, Jason Lieser of the Palm Beach Post tracked down the father of 2011 Tennessee signee Curt Maggitt in an attempt to find out why the South Florida product, long thought to be destined for Florida, ended up in Knoxville.

In his conversation with Lieser, Roosevelt Maggitt revealed that the reasons behind urging his four-star son to attend UT instead of UF were, in essence, two-fold. One, the Gator football program’s “legal history”. And, secondly, an assistant coach -- not defensive coordinator Dan Quinn as taking liberties with a piece of furniture during an in-home visit.

No, seriously.

“It was several things,” Roosevelt Maggitt said. “The No. 1 reason was we evaluated UF’s history. I see guys get up there and then they get pulled over for nonsense. I didn’t want Curt to be involved in that.

...

“I didn’t get good vibes from him,” he said. “He kind of disrespected my house. Any time a man puts his shoe on your table, that ain’t no good. That didn’t show respect for my house.”

OK then.

As noted by Lieser, a total of 27 Gator football players were arrested between 2005 and 2010. A handful of players have been arrested and charged this year as well, with the latest coming earlier this week.

As for the whole shoe-on-the-table thing? Apparently UF’s compliance department needs to mix in some Emily Post along with their recruiting bylaw do’s and don’ts.
