I can hear my God’s Country friends and neighbors now. “Thank you Lord; what took ya so long?”
Following up on two very underwhelming years with Keith Patterson in charge of the defense, West Virginia announced Thursday that the defensive coordinator “has voluntarily left the football program and is no longer a member of the coaching staff.” Patterson will reportedly take a job on Todd Graham‘s coaching staff at Arizona State. Patterson and Graham were college roommates and have worked together in the past.
Head coach Dana Holgorsen, on the other hand, will be in search of his fourth defensive coordinator since coming to Morgantown in 2011.
“I want to thank Keith for his two years that he spent coaching in our program,” Holgorsen said in a statement. “He was a valuable member of our staff, and we wish him nothing but the best.”
In two years with Patterson as coordinator, the Mountaineers finished 99th (33.3 points per game, 2013) and 114th (38.1 ppg, 2012) in scoring defense. In total defense, WVU finished 2013 101st (455 yards per game) after ending 2012 114th (472.5 ypg).
