Wyoming QB undergoes surgery; should be a go for spring

Last season Brett Smith was one of the most talented -- and unheralded -- true freshmen quarterbacks in the country.

As the Wyoming signal caller gets set to transition into his second season under center, however, he’s hit a little medical bump in the offseason road.

The Cowboys confirmed via a press release Friday that Smith had indeed undergone a surgical procedure Thursday. The release did not get into the specifics behind the procedure, however, stating instead that the school “does not discuss details of injuries or surgeries.”

Randy Gigliardi of the Laramie Boomerang subsequently tweeted that Smith "[h]ad something done with his hand/thumb. Had a cut midseason that never healed.”

Regardless of what the reason was behind the surgery, head coach Dave Christensen said “we expect Brett to be back during spring ball.”

In 2011, Smith started all 13 games for the Cowboys, throwing for 2,622 yards and leading the team in rushing with 710 yards. Hew accounted for 30 touchdowns -- 20 passing and 10 rushing.

For that performance, he was named the Mountain West’s Freshman of the Year.
