Patriots signed sixth-round pick Justin Rogers to a three-year contract.
Rogers, who played defensive end at SMU, will convert to outside linebacker with the Patriots. He may need to prove more effective than Corey Mays and/or Pierre Woods on special teams to secure a spot in the 53-man roster.
  • FA Linebacker
Bengals acquired LB Corey Mays off waivers from New England.
The Bengals were desperate at linebacker after placing Lemar Marshall in IR. Mays was a special teamer with NE in Week 1, but was released after being inactive for Weeks 2 and 3.

Rashad Jeanty is inactive for the Bengals on Saturday night.
Jeanty, who has been a key part of an improved Bengals’ run defense over the past five weeks, will be replaced by Corey Mays. Give Frank Gore a slight upgrade. The Bengals also declared DE Frostee Rucker, WR Marcus Maxwell, CB David Jones, C Dan Santucci, TE Nate Lawrie, and RT Willie Anderson inactive. Anderson’s return would have been a boost for the Cincy offense.
  • KC Linebacker #56
The Chiefs will rely more heavily on Derrick Johnson at inside linebacker following Zach Thomas’ departure.
Corey Mays and Monty Beisel are options to replace Thomas, but Johnson will be Kansas City’s featured inside player and is likely to lead the club in tackles. Also playing for a contract, D.J. should present value in IDP drafts.

Chiefs beat writer Kent Babb suggests that Corey Mays could overtake Zach Thomas to start at inside linebacker.
Babb loves stirring the pot with talk of depth chart moves, but this probably isn’t happening unless Thomas’ undisclosed injury lingers. After four years in the league, we know what Mays is -- a solid reserve and special teamer. Thomas was signed to start and help install K.C.'s new defense.
  • FA Linebacker
Corey Mays and Demorrio Williams were the Chiefs’ starting inside linebackers in Sunday’s opener.
We’re betting Derrick Johnson, who made a big play off the bench while K.C.'s starters were gashed by the Baltimore run game, will pass Williams shortly. Mays, playing the ILB spot the Chiefs originally ticketed for Zach Thomas, is probably safe. He’s also more experienced than Williams in the 3-4 system.
  • CIN Linebacker
Following Odell Thurman’s release, the Bengals have moved Dhani Jones to middle linebacker. Jones is expected to wear the defensive helmet communicator, meaning he’ll be a three-down player.
Ahmad Brooks is staying at SAM for now. Jones, who finished second on the Bengals in tackles last year, has played outside most of his career. Still, he becomes a big IDP sleeper at the MIKE. Corey Mays could emerge as his main backup.
  • DET Wide Receiver
Bengals have tendered WR Glenn Holt, LB Rashad Jeanty and LB Corey Mays, all exclusive rights free agents.
Holt will compete for a roster spot, but the team is actively looking for someone to replace him as kick returner. Jeanty was a big part of the Bengals’ improved run defense last year. Corey Mays showed some promise as a backup on the strong side and is a more than willing special teamer.
