Royals optioned RHP Mason Black to Triple-A Omaha.

Black had allowed runs in each of his last four outings after starting the year with a 1.86 ERA in 9.2 innings over his first eight appearances. He’ll likely be back up in the near future when the Royals need a fresh arm.
Mariners call up elite pitching prospect Anderson
The Seattle Mariners called up top pitching prospect Kade Anderson, who is expected to start against the Chicago Cubs this Saturday. Eric Samulski emphasizes why he should be added in all fantasy formats.

The 26-year-old hurler has done a decent job in 12 appearances out of the Royals’ bullpen this season, registering a 3.37 ERA, 1.69 WHIP and a 15/11 K/BB ratio over 17 2/3 innings. Aaron Bummer was optioned to Triple-A Omaha in a corresponding move on Friday to clear a spot in the bullpen.

The Royals need a fresh arm in the bullpen, so Black will return to Kansas City to operate as a middle-inning option who can work multiple frames if need be.

Despite giving up seven hits and two walks, Black pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings during his two weeks in the majors.
  • KC Starting Pitcher #47
The Royals desperately needed to add a fresh arm to their bullpen mix on Sunday and Black makes perfect sense as he has worked as a starter in the past and can give them multiple innings. He posted a 3.86 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and a 6/5 K/BB ratio over 11 2/3 innings in his first seven appearances at Triple-A Omaha. He can continue to be ignored for fantasy purposes.

Bergert’s departure from camp is a notable development since it virtually guarantees that Noah Cameron will have a rotation spot to open the year. The 26-year-old righty posted a respectable 3.66 ERA (4.32 xERA), 1.26 WHIP and 73/35 K/BB ratio across 76 1/3 innings between the Royals and Padres as a rookie last year. Misner and Rave were candidates for a spot on Kansas City’s bench but will head back to the minors to open the year. They profile as platoon options at the highest level.

There was some hope that Black, who was DFA’d Thursday, would turn into a mid-rotation starter a couple of years back, but he went just 1-5 with a 6.47 ERA in eight starts and two relief appearances with the Giants the last two seasons, and his formerly impressive minor league strikeout rates have really fallen off (29% in 2022, 30% in 2023, 24% in 2024, 21% in 2025). He has an option left and the Royals have ample starting pitching depth, so Black figures to open 2026 back in Triple-A.
  • SF Starting Pitcher #47
Black’s removal from San Francisco’s 40-man mix doesn’t come as a shock after he posted a disastrous 6.47 ERA across 40 1/3 innings over 10 appearances (eight starts) in the big leagues over the past two seasons.

Black threw worked four innings in relief during Friday’s game, and the Giants will call up Tristan Beck to provide a fresh multi-inning arm for the San Francisco bullpen.

Black gets the call to join San Francisco’s relief mix ahead of Tuesday’s game against the Diamondbacks with rookie Carson Seymour returning to the minors. The 25-year-old posted a bloated 6.44 ERA and 31/15 K/BB ratio over 36 1/3 innings (nine appearances, eight starts) last year in his first taste of the big leagues. He figures to operate in long relief.
  • SF Shortstop #37
Luciano was moved to the outfield this spring, and the Giants will give him more reps in the grass at the Triple-A level before a potential call-up. Black is one of the more talented arms in the San Francisco system and could make appearances for the Giants by the end of 2025, but his inconsistent command makes him a tough sell from a fantasy perspective.

Ben Brown felt good Saturday after throwing live batting practice Friday and is close to beginning a rehab assignment.

He’s due for one more live BP session first. Brown, on the shelf since late June with a neck strain, is hoping to rejoin the Cubs as a starting pitcher next month, though depending on how his rehab goes and how the rest of the rotation is doing, he could be brought back as a reliever instead.

Tyler Glasnow will come off the injured list to face the Braves on Tuesday.

It’ll be Glasnow’s first MLB start since May 6 after 3 1/2 months off with back problems. He won’t be on a specific pitch count after throwing 77 pitches in his last rehab start, and it should be safe to start him in mixed leagues.

All-Star Justin Wrobleski will serve as a middle reliever upon rejoining the Dodgers, manager Dave Roberts said.

Wrobleski went on the IL six days ago with forearm inflammation, but he’s feeling better and threw a bullpen session today. The switch to the pen comes after he overtook his previous career high in innings and struggled in his last four starts, surrendering 19 earned runs over 19 2/3 innings. He could come off the IL in early September, but it looks he’ll be a two- or three-inning guy when it happens.

Edwin Díaz, on the IL with neck inflammation, threw a bullpen session Saturday.

Díaz is eligible to return on Sept. 2 and should be ready then or shortly thereafter. Manager Dave Roberts did say he’d be used in lower leverage spots initially. Tanner Scott will likely keep closing until Díaz can string together a few strong innings.

Luis Campusano is sitting Saturday for a second straight game and third time in four games.

Freddy Fermin has now started eight of 12 games behind the plate, with Campusano catching four times and DHing once during that span. Campusano is out-OPSing Fermin .904 to .568, but Fermin’s defense matters more to Craig Stammen. The Padres have gone 36-26 with Fermin starting.

Brayan Rocchio is on the bench for a second straight game Saturday against the Rockies.

Prior to Friday, Rocchio had received just one day off since the break and had started 122 of 128 games this season. Tonight, though, he again finds himself on the bench in favor of Angel Genao at shortstop. Rocchio has hit .183/.230/.270 during the second half, lowering his overall OPS from .750 to .685.

Roch Cholowsky, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 draft, has been shut down for the year with right wrist soreness.

Cholowsky had gone 6-for-36 with a homer and seven walks in nine games for High-A Winston Salem. He’ll probably return there for the start of next year, but he might be in Double-A before long.

Nathan Lukes went 2-for-3 with a solo homer and two RBI on Saturday, leading the Blue Jays to a 4-3 win over the Yankees.

Not a bad effort at all considering that Lukes wasn’t even in Toronto’s lineup to open the contest. He entered as a pinch-hitter in the fourth inning and immediately delivered an RBI single to extended the Blue Jays’ early lead. He wound up supplying a pivotal insurance run when he took Yankees rookie reliever Bradley Hanner deep in the eighth inning for his eighth round-tripper of the season. With the victory, Toronto pulls within one game of the Rangers for the final AL Wild Card playoff spot.
