Jason Adam earns save with Mason Miller resting

Good news. Carroll was removed from Sunday’s game after going 1-for-4 with two strikeouts. If he needs Monday off, Jorge Barrosa will probably get a start in the outfield.

Zeferjahn gave up the homer to start the inning, making it a one-run game, but he retired the remaining three batters he faced. He’s now gone five straight appearances without allowing a walk, which is pretty big. He’d walked 31 in 40 2/3 innings previously. If he continues to stay away from the free passes, he might be a decent enough closer for the Angels. However, his name has already started coming up in trade rumors as the Halos prepare to sell at the deadline.

Adell is 0-for-19 with one walk during the two-series stretch. He hit the ball hard twice today, but both were pounded right into the ground. Adell is still showing elite bat speed, and his 22.4 percent strikeout rate is the lowest mark of his career. One would think he’d be doing better than this, and he might be a candidate for a change-of-scenery trade before the deadline.

Carpenter is 3-for-34 with no extra-base hits or RBI this month, dropping his OPS from .810 to .722. He put four balls in play today and none of them topped 90 mph. Considering his inability to hit lefties and his lack of defensive value, Carpenter is quite the liability when he’s not crushing righties. The Tigers need a lot more from him than this.

Carroll was removed for a pinch hitter in the ninth inning in the extra-inning victory. He went 1-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts before leaving, and looked to be in a good amount of pain in his final at-bat. The Diamondbacks should have an update on Carroll’s potential availability soon.

With Dominic Canzone resting, the 22-year-old Young hit third for the first time this season today, even though the Mariners were facing a lefty and Young had hit just .217/.267/.330 against southpaws. It worked out just fine, obviously. Young reached on an error, struck out and singled against Robbie Ray and then homered off righty Adrian Houser in the seventh. He also hit a big homer in Saturday’s win, and he now has 13 on the year.

Gilbert gave up three hits, including a homer, in a two-run first and then just one more over his remaining five innings. The 10 strikeouts matched his season high established last month against the Orioles. He’s 6-2 with a 2.42 ERA in his last 10 starts, and he’s up to 10th in the majors with 129 strikeouts on the season. He’ll pitch in Texas next weekend.

It’s Muñoz’s fourth straight hitless appearance. He hasn’t allowed a run in any of his last 12 outings, and he’s now up to 17 saves on the year.
