Joel Kuhnel allowed one hit, walked two batters, and hit another in a four-out save against the Reds on Wednesday.

Apart from the Brewers witchcraft in adding about three ticks to Kuhnel’s sinker, they’re now using him in high leverage. This was his second straight outing where he recorded a save and he literally saved the day in the eighth inning after the Reds scratched four runs across against Grant Anderson and Craig Yoho to make this a one-run game. Kuhnel calmed everything down that inning before loading the bases in the ninth and getting out of it with a timely double play. He has quickly moved into the circle of trust, but be advised that all of Trevor Megill, Abner Uribe, and Aaron Ashby had just worked two days in a row prior to this game, so at best Kuhnel is still captain of the B-team bullpen.
Alexander to 'miss some time' with hand injury
With Blaze Alexander suffering a broken hand on Sunday ahead of the All-Star break, Eric Samulski shares how fantasy managers should proceed with the outfielder and the Orioles' fantasy pieces.

It seems Drew Rom’s stay in the Milwaukee pen could be very brief. Kuhnel was DFA’d by the A’s on Friday after blowing a save chance on Thursday. The 31-year-old journeyman had a 4.21 ERA, four saves and a 14/6 K/BB in 25 2/3 innings for the A’s. He’s out of options, so he’ll go right on to the major league roster.

The 31-year-old hurler came on with a three-run lead to protect in the ninth inning against the Cubs on Thursday afternoon and gave up four runs on five hits to take the loss. That appears to have been the final nail in his coffin. Kuhnel posted a respectable 4.21 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and a 14/6 K/BB ratio over 25 2/3 innings while notching four saves in 25 appearances for the A’s. He shouldn’t be out of work for long.
  • ATH Relief Pitcher #67
Kuhnel’s first save chance since Apr. 20 was a complete bust, though not actually a blown save. That went to Luis Medina, who came in with two on and the lead down to one and then gave up back-to-back singles to end things. Still, this was all Kuhnel’s mess. He was the Athletics’ early season saves leader despite opening up in the minors, but there’s a reason he hadn’t had any chances in a long time. He shouldn’t see another any day soon.

After finishing off a four-run lead last night, Perkins gave up two singles and a double today to blow his second save chance in two tries this month. This might take him out of the mix for a spell, increasing the chances that Joel Kuhnel and Scott Barlow could wind up with saves. Barlow pitched a scoreless eighth today for his eighth hold.

Joel Kuhnel got five outs between the eighth and ninth tonight, but since it was 5-1 when he entered, he wasn’t in line for a save. Leiter came in with one on in a 5-2 game in the ninth and walked Isaac Collins before striking out Jac Caglianone to end the game. It’s his third save, but he has a 6.23 ERA and seems to be only a minor part of the Athletics’’ closer-by-committee situation at the moment.

This was an odd one for the A’s, as their most frequent ninth-inning choice of late, Joel Kuhnel, was brought in to the game in the fourth inning after J.T. Ginn got hurt. He pitched out of trouble then and starter Jacob Lopez went on to work the fifth, giving up what proved to be the Rangers’ only run of the game. From there, Justin Sterner, Hogan Harris and Perkins protected a 2-1 lead over the final four innings. It’s the second straight A’s save that’s gone to Perkins, who has a 3.18 ERA and a 15/3 K/BB in 11 1/3 innings over six appearances. Given the way the A’s like to use him, he probably won’t turn into their true closer. Still, he might be the most rosterable A’s reliever right now.
  • ATH Relief Pitcher #67
Kuhnel got a double-play ball from J.P. Crawford after a leadoff single, but he just gave up three more singles afterwards, with Josh Naylor’s ending the game. The run is the second he’s allowed in 7 2/3 innings since the A’s called him up. He remains 4-for-4 in his save chances, and he’ll probably be the clear favorite for saves in Sacramento until he blows one.
  • ATH Relief Pitcher #67
Kuhnel did give up a run on a double by Leo Rivas to score Cole Young, but it came in a game the A’s were leading 6-3 at the time. The 31-year-old was able to get J.P. Crawford and Cal Raleigh to fly out as the tying runs to procure his fourth save of the campaign. He should continue to see save chances for the foreseeable future.
  • ATH Relief Pitcher #67
Mark Leiter Jr., who was brought in with a 6-2 lead in the eighth, gave up a three-run homer to Jake Burger, necessitating Kuhnel’s early entrance. All worked out for the A’s, though, as Kuhnel retired the four batters he faced. He’s 3-for-3 saving games and has yet to allow a run since being called up on Apr. 7. There still isn’t much reason to believe Kuhnel will be an above reliever going forward, but he’s definitely the pitcher worth rostering in the A’s pen at the moment.
  • ATH Relief Pitcher #67
Hogan Harris and Scott Barlow also pitched hitless innings in setup roles today. Kuhnel generated three easy groundballs with his sinker today, needing a total of four pitches in the process. There’s not really any projecting him as an above average reliever going forward, but he’s probably the favorite for saves in the Athletics’ pen, even though he only just joined the team 10 days into the season.

Cody Bellinger was named the MVP of the MLB All-Star Game at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.

Bellinger delivered a two-run single off Phillies ace Cristopher Sánchez in the first inning that proved to be more than enough for the American League’s loaded pitching staff as they piled up 15 strikeouts and tossed a three-hit shutout. It was his lone hit in three at-bats during the low-scoring affair. The 31-year-old outfielder made an impact during his first Midsummer Classic appearance since 2019. The Yankees open the second half with a three-game series in New York against the defending World Series champion Dodgers starting on Friday.

Miguel Vargas launched a solo homer to propel the American League to a 4-0 shutout win over the National League in the 2026 MLB All-Star Game at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia on Tuesday.

Vargas supplied the lone hit for either side in a low-scoring Midsummer Classic when he took his former Dodgers minor league teammate Justin Wrobleski deep with a 433-foot blast into the second deck in left field in the eighth inning. The American League’s pitching staff was the story in this one, piling up an astronomical 15 strikeouts and tossed a three-hit shutout. Vargas was one of the driving forces behind Chicago’s rapid turnaround, finishing the first half with a .245/.355/.493 slash line with a career-high 21 homers, 59 RBI and 11 stolen bases across 409 plate appearances through 94 games. The White Sox kick off the second half with a road series against the Blue Jays.

Dylan Cease struck out the side in a scoreless inning on Tuesday in the MLB All-Star Game at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.

Cease took the ball for the American League and delivered an impressive performance in his first Midsummer Classic. He struck out Kyle Schwarber with a nasty slider before blowing a 98-mph fastball past Juan Soto. It was Freddie Freeman who extended the inning with a nine-pitch walk, but Cease rebounded to strike out CJ Abrams and escape the frame completely unscathed. The 30-year-old righty wrapped up a phenomenal first half in his Blue Jays debut with a 2.56 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 148/44 K/BB ratio over 98 1/3 innings. He’s performed like a bona fide fantasy ace and will open the second half with a home start this weekend against his former club, the upstart White Sox.

Cristopher Sánchez was charged with three runs over one inning on Tuesday in the MLB All-Star Game at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.

Sánchez drew the starting assignment for the National League in front of his hometown fans and labored through a 34-pitch opening frame. He struck out Mike Trout with a devastating changeup before giving up a sharp single to center field to Yordan Alvarez and walking Shea Langeliers on four pitches. After coaxing a harmless ground out from Junior Caminero, he issued a free pass to Bobby Witt Jr. to load the bases. Cody Bellinger followed with a two-run single to center field and Ben Rice tacked on an RBI single before Sánchez escaped the inning by striking out Riley Greene. The 29-year-old southpaw put together a remarkable 50 2/3 scoreless innings streak and finished the first half with a 2.62 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 144/25 K/BB ratio across 127 1/3 innings. He’s lined up to face the Dodgers at home in his second-half debut next week.

X-rays came back negative on Junior Caminero’s left hand after being hit by a pitch during the MLB All-Star Game at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia on Tuesday.

It’s a massive relief for Tampa Bay, and fantasy managers, as Caminero appears to have avoided serious injury based on initial imaging. The 23-year-old rising superstar was struck on the left hand by a 97-mph heater from Cardinals closer Riley O’Brien in the third inning and immediately left the exhibition contest. He’ll undergo further evaluation and treatment in the coming days, but it seems like there’s a decent chance that he’s ready to roll when the Rays kick off the second half with a doubleheader against the Red Sox on Friday at Fenway Park.

Rangers SS prospect Sebastian Walcott (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment on Tuesday in the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League.

Walcott is seeing his first game action since undergoing an internal brace procedure on his right elbow back in late February. The 20-year-old top prospect has been on a rocket ship towards the majors since signing with the Rangers back in 2023. He hit .255/.355/.386 with 13 homers and 32 steals in 552 plate appearances as a teenager at Double-A Frisco. He doesn’t offer massive stolen base upside, but he might have one of the highest power ceilings of any middle infield prospect in the minors.

Junior Caminero was removed from Tuesday’s MLB All-Star Game at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia after being hit by a pitch on the left hand.

Not great. It’s the last thing anyone, especially fantasy managers, want to see in the Midsummer Classic. Caminero appeared to be in a significant amount of pain after being struck by a 97-mph heater from Cardinals closer Riley O’Brien directly on the left hand. The power-hitting 23-year-old rising superstar will head for X-rays to determine whether he suffered any fractures. An update on his status should come after the contest.

Wright’s once-promising career was derailed by injury and he hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since the 2023 season due to shoulder issues. The 30-year-old never wound up appearing in a game for the Cubs and didn’t pitch in their system after signing a minor league deal back in February.

Alexander was pitching for the Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League. The 37-year-old southpaw last appeared in the majors when he made 21 appearances between the Giants and Rockies back in 2025. He’s merely emergency organizational depth at this stage of his career.

Cubs sent RHP Jake Woodford outright to Triple-A Iowa.

Woodford went unclaimed on waivers after being designated for assignment last weekend. The 29-year-old righty allowed three runs over two innings during his lone relief appearance for the Cubs. He’s posted an inflated 7.46 ERA across 25 1/3 innings over 17 appearances between the Cubs and Brewers this season.
