Jorge Soler is not in the Angels’ starting lineup for Sunday’s series finale against the Athletics.

It appears to be nothing more than a routine day of maintenance for the 34-year-old slugger. Nolan Schanuel will function as the team’s designated hitter in his place while Vaughn Grissom will start at first base and bat fifth for the Halos against Athletics’ right-hander Aaron Civale.
Skenes wins second straight start after slide
Dave Flemming, Tim Dillard, and Bob Walk reveal their top takeaways from the Pirates' impressive three-game sweep of the Brewers, capped off by a blowout win on Sunday where Paul Skenes won his second straight start.

Grissom got the Angels going in the fourth inning with a solo home run off Twins’ starter Zebby Matthews and drove in their final run in the following frame with a sacrifice fly. He could be working his way into an everyday role again with his third straight here and sixth in the Angels’ last nine games.

Grissom was swinging well and playing regularly before going on the injured list with an oblique issue at the beginning of the month, but he’s just 3-for-21 since returning and the Angels have decided they prefer Donovan Walton and Denzer Guzman over him. With 58 hard-hit balls and just 20 strikeouts over 176 plate appearances, Grissom has shown some promise this year. He seems worthy of more playing time.
  • LAA Designated Hitter #12
The Orioles scored once in the top of the 10th, which would have been enough if their defense hadn’t faltered. After two quick outs in the bottom of the inning, with the automatic runner having advanced to third, Nolan Schanuel hit a routine grounder to the right side. It was clearly the second baseman’s ball, but Pete Alonso started to go after it and couldn’t recover and Keegan Akin couldn’t handle a bad throw on the run while trying to cover first. With the throw getting away, Schanuel advanced all of the way to third. Logan O’Hoppe then hit a tapper down the third base line. Samuel Basallo got to it too late to attempt to go to first, and Schanuel was able to run around his tag attempt without being called for being out of the baseline. Akin also made no attempt to get to home plate for a tag play, though that might not have worked out anyway. So, that’s how the Angels won. Soler had nothing to do with the rally, but his two-run homer was the team’s biggest real hit of the game. He has two homers, four RBI and three walks in three games since coming off the IL.
  • LAA Designated Hitter #12
Soler rejoins Los Angeles’ lineup for Monday’s series opener against the Orioles following a two-week absence recovering from a mild oblique strain. The 34-year-old slugging corner outfielder has delivered a pedestrian .220/.300/.402 slash line with nine homers and 33 RBI across 243 plate appearances over 58 games this season. He’s a fringe option in deeper mixed leagues as a cheap power source at this stage of his career, especially given his struggles to avoid the injured list over the past two seasons.
  • LAA Designated Hitter #12
Soler has been out since June 4 with an oblique strain that must have been pretty mild. He was hitting .246/.291/.385 before getting hurt, so he hasn’t been very helpful this year. Still, he figures to return as a regular, partly in the hopes that he’ll put together a hot streak and net a modest return at the trade deadline.
  • LAA 2nd Baseman #5
The Angels appear to be easing Grissom back into action, as he started two straight games after coming off the injured list on Wednesday. Expect him to be back in there on Saturday. Nolan Schanuel is at first base and batting second for the Halos against opposing left-hander Jeffrey Springs on Friday evening in West Sacramento.
  • LAA 2nd Baseman #5
Grissom has been out since June 8th with the oblique strain and could get right back into the starting lineup. The 25-year-old was hitting .246/.325/.410 with four homers and 27 RBI across 155 plate appearances through 40 games. He remains an option in deep fantasy leagues.

Grissom heads to the injured list after missing three consecutive contests over the weekend with side tightness. No word yet on the severity of the strain, which will determine how much time he misses. The 25-year-old has proven to be a worthwhile reclamation project for a perpetually rebuilding Los Angeles franchise, hitting .246/.325/.410 with four homers and 27 RBI across 155 plate appearances through 40 games.
  • LAA Shortstop #43
This might mean that Vaughn Grissom is IL bound, which would be unfortunate. The 22-year-old Guzmán has hit .336/.403/.571 for Triple-A Salt Lake. If he thrives, he could get a chance to stick at second or third, and while it probably won’t happen this year, the Angels could consider moving Zach Neto off shortstop to make room for Guzman in the future.
  • LAA 2nd Baseman #5
Grissom was a late scratch from Friday’s lineup due to tightness in his left side and now he winds up missing the entire weekend series against the Dodgers. It sounds like he has shown improvement and will be able to avoid a trip to the injured list, but if this lingers into the start of next week, the Angels may be forced to make a move.

Nationals optioned Abimelec Ortiz to Triple-A Rochester.

Ortiz’s major league stint lasted just a few hours, but at least he did get to start and go 1-for-2 against the Yankees. The Nationals will add a pitcher in his place after the break.

Ildemaro Vargas went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI as the Diamondbacks topped the Dodgers 5-3 on Sunday.

Vargas doubled and scored in the fifth. In the sixth, he hit what should have been another double on a drive into the right field corner, but either because he thought it was a homer or that it was going foul, he didn’t run out of the box and then was thrown out at first base after a wide turn towards second. It still drove in the go-ahead run in what had been a 3-3 tie, and it gave him just his second multihit game since May 19.

Mitch Bratt gave up three runs in three innings in his emergency start Sunday against the Dodgers.

Bratt was called up after it was revealed Saturday that Zac Gallen was being scratched. He struck out none and walked three today, throwing just 29 of his 58 pitches for strikes. The Diamondbacks, though, wound up winning 5-3 anyway, as six relievers all pitched scoreless innings behind him. It’s unclear if Bratt will stick around and start the second half in the rotation or return to Triple-A.

Paul Sewald recorded his 22nd save with a perfect ninth Sunday against the Dodgers.

Even with his 4.24 ERA, Sewald has saved the Diamondbacks’ bacon by going 22-for-23 in save chances this year. The team will likely be a buyer at the deadline, but it’s highly unlikely that it’ll be targeting a closer upgrade. Starting pitching, on the other hand, seems like a big need.

Emmet Sheehan surrendered three runs — one earned — in 5 1/3 innings Sunday in a loss to the Diamondbacks.

After four scoreless frames, Sheehan was let down by his defense while giving up two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth. The Dodgers probably would have used a quicker hook with Sheehan today if not for the bullpen game Friday. As per usual, his velocity waned as the game went on; he averaged 95.6 mph with his fastball in the first but was down to 93.8 mph in the fifth and 92.8 mph in the sixth. There’s going to be a good argument for putting him in the pen once Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow return, but he should stay in the rotation for now.

Shohei Ohtani homered and doubled for the Dodgers’ only extra-base hits in Sunday’s loss to the Diamondbacks.

The homer came on the first pitch of the bottom of the first, giving him nine leadoff homers this season. Ohtani was scheduled to have his left knee drained after the game. He’ll sit out the All-Star Game, but he’ll probably be in the lineup when play resumes Friday.

Teoscar Hernández struck out three times and walked once Sunday against the Diamondbacks.

It’s Hernández’s fourth straight hitless game. He was swinging the bat really well in the couple of weeks leading up his hamstring injury at the end of May, but since returning, he’s 4-for-41 with one homer and no other extra-base hits. Given the quality of his defense, he needs to do considerably better than his current .243/.319/.387 line to justify regular playing time on a team as strong as the Dodgers are.
