Luis Castillo lost to the Blue Jays after allowing two runs and five hits in six innings on Friday.

Unfortunately, three of the five hits came in a four-batter span in the third inning, producing both runs. That was enough to doom him in what turned out to be a 2-0 game. Castillo has a nice 2.72 ERA and a 30/9 K/BB in 36 1/3 innings over his last seven appearances. If there are no changes, he’s currently in line to make his next start Thursday against the Marlins.
Swanson red-hot in 'unfathomable' turnaround
James Schiano highlights Dansby Swanson's offensive surge over the past 13 games with the Cubs, which includes nine homers, 29 RBIs, and a place in the history books.

The 33-year-old right-hander punched out four opposing hitters on the night while issuing one free pass. The Guardians scratched out a run against him on an RBI double by Kahlil Watson in the third inning, but that was all that they could muster. Castillo generated 10 swings and misses on 91 pitches on the night, posting a CSW of 26 percent. He’ll attempt to replicate this fine effort when he takes the ball next week against the Angels.

He’s not the first reliever to give up five runs to the Red Sox since Tanyon Sturtze in 2008, but it doesn’t seem totally unrealistic, does it? The Mariners are piggybacking their six starters through the All-Star break, and it seemed like Castillo would get a start the next time through after relieving tonight. However, it was already very clear that he should be sixth in line for starts, and it’s hard to understand why it’d make sense to pitch any of the Mariners’ other five starters behind him next week.
  • SEA Starting Pitcher #50
There’s a lot to unpack here. According to Mariners general manager Justin Hollander, it was a unanimous decision by all six starters — Logan Gilbert, George Kirby, Bryan Woo, Emerson Hancock, Bryce Miller and Luis Castillo — to move to a schedule where each pitcher will rotate through and have piggyback days. Ironically, the arrangement will begin with Castillo piggybacking out of the bullpen with Miller during Friday’s series opener against the Red Sox. The decision will have a significant fantasy impact simply by reducing the overall volume for each starter over the next few weeks. The unorthodox arrangement feels like a temporary stopgap solution until the arrival of top prospects Kade Anderson and Ryan Sloan later this summer ultimately forces Seattle to move on from at least one of their veteran arms.

After a runner reached on an error in the first inning, Castillo gave up three straight two-out hits to bring three runs in for the Nationals, all unearned. He settled in to toss three more scoreless innings before Luis García Jr. got to him with a two-run homer in the fifth. Castillo recorded two outs in the sixth and departed with two runners on at 84 pitches with four strikeouts. The 33-year-old right-hander will take a 5.00 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, and a 65/25 K/BB ratio across 66 2/3 innings into a start against the Red Sox in Seattle next Saturday.

Castillo punched out five opposing hitters in the ballgame while issuing only one base on balls. The lone tally against him came on a solo homer off the bat of Kevin McGonigle in the fourth inning. Aside from that, the 33-year-old hurler was brilliant. He generated 12 swings and misses on 100 pitches on the day, posting a CSW of 22 percent. He exited with a comfortable 4-1 advantage and in line for a win, but the Mariners’ bullpen couldn’t hang onto it for him. He’ll bring a 5.16 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and a 61/23 K/BB ratio (61 innings) into Saturday’s matchup against the Nationals in Washington.

Castillo expressed some frustration with the piggyback situation following his last outing against the Athletics where he threw 68 pitches over four shutout frames. Miller has voiced similar displeasure with the situation as well. However, the bizarre arrangement has worked for the Mariners from a results standpoint with Castillo and Miller combining to limit the Athletics to just a pair of runs over nine innings their last time out. It’s possible the pair’s reluctance to pitch in relief will lead to Seattle changing their roles. It’ll be Miller opening the contest with Castillo following on Sunday afternoon at T-Mobile Park.

Castillo had thrown just 68 pitches and was one inning away from a win in 7-0 game, so he was none too happy about being lifted. Still, this is the arrangement the Mariners are using, with Castillo and Bryce Miller piggybacking. Something will give eventually, but at least both pitched well in a 9-2 win tonight. Castillo’s ERA dropped from 6.41 to 5.90. He’ll likely pitch again Sunday against the D-backs.

Bryce Miller will work behind him in a piggyback role. It’s the reverse of what we saw the last time these two took the mound, where Miller started against the White Sox on Tuesday and Castillo followed with another miserable outing to blow his lead. Miller is the only one out of the duo that should be utilized for fantasy purposes.
  • SEA Starting Pitcher #50
Miller was lights out against the White Sox on Tuesday, holding them scoreless into the sixth. He allowed just one hit and walked one batter, tossing 50 of 72 pitches for strikes while generating 13 whiffs to strike out seven. Luis Castillo followed Miller as planned and pitched two scoreless innings before allowing two runners to reach in the ninth, eventually blowing the win for Miller and taking the loss. The 27-year-old right-hander has been excellent over his first two starts back from the injured list, giving up two runs with a 10/2 K/BB ratio over 11 frames. He’ll look to keep it going on Monday in Sacramento against the Athletics.

Miller and Castillo will work in tandem instead of Seattle shifting to a six-man rotation. It’s going to look and feel a bit different, but this type of arrangement makes the most sense for the Mariners moving forward. Miller figures to gobble up most of the innings as a traditional starter before turning things over to Castillo for a long relief outing. Wilson also mentioned possibly going to a reliever before Castillo, which is a fun wrinkle. Get the popcorn ready.

Jacob Young was scratched from the lineup for Saturday’s game against the Pirates.

No word yet on the reason for the move. It’ll be Dylan Crews taking over in center field with José Tena entering the lineup at DH. There should be an update on his status shortly.

Yankees recalled RHP Brendan Beck from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Beck gets the nod to replace an injured Carlos Rodón (elbow) in New York’s rotation. The 27-year-old allowed two runs over three innings during a bulk relief outing against the Rangers in his major-league debut back on May 7. He’s posted an encouraging 3.07 ERA across 88 innings at the Triple-A level this season. He’s not a recommended option for fantasy purposes.

Bailey Ober (elbow) will make a minor league rehab start for Triple-A St. Paul on Saturday.

Ober kicked off a rehab assignment by allowing three runs over 3 1/3 innings for High-A Cedar Rapids last Sunday. The 30-year-old starter is working his way back from a mild flexor strain that put him on the shelf back in late May. He figures to be ready to rejoin Minnesota’s pitching mix at some point in early-to-mid July. His fantasy appeal is limited to deeper mixed leagues as a matchup-dependent back-end rotation arm.

Pirates recalled RHP Hunter Stratton from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Stratton rejoins Pittsburgh’s low-leverage relief mix with Evan Sisk hitting the injured list with elbow inflammation. The 29-year-old was reacquired from the Braves in the Joey Bart trade last month. He made 47 appearances for the Pirates from 2023-2025.

Pirates placed LHP Evan Sisk on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to July 1, with left elbow inflammation.

Sisk hits the shelf after posting a strong 2.23 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 43/13 K/BB ratio across 36 1/3 innings for the Pirates since mid-April. No word yet regarding how much time he’ll miss.

Esmerlyn Valdez is hitting cleanup for the fourth consecutive game on Saturday against the Nationals.

Valdez has been on a tear since returning to the majors back on June 11, hitting .411 (19-for-46) with four homers and 11 RBI across 15 games. The most encouraging aspect of his recent performance is that he’s struck out just a shade over 25 percent of the time during that span. The 22-year-old projects as a streaky power hitter given his strikeout issues in the upper minors. However, he’s in a groove right now and should continue batting in the heart of Pittsburgh’s lineup. Those factors alone make him a worthy of a speculative roster spot in all fantasy formats.

Zack Littell will make a bulk relief appearance on Saturday against the Pirates.

It’ll be lefty Carson Palmquist taking the ball as Washington’s opener before turning things over to Littell for an extended relief outing. The 30-year-old veteran has routinely pitched behind an opener this season and boasts a pedestrian 5.29 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 49/25 K/BB ratio across 80 innings of work. He’s not a recommended fantasy option, especially with temperatures hovering in the triple-digits at Nationals Park during this Fourth of July mid-day affair.

Mike Trout (hamstring) told reporters Friday that he’s aiming to return from the injured list next week.

Trout went through his normal pregame routine prior to Friday’s showdown against the visiting Red Sox at Angel Stadium and appears on track to return next week without requiring a rehab assignment. The 34-year-old generational talent has been recovering from a hamstring strain that put him on the shelf back on June 18. It also looks increasingly likely that the New Jersey native will be ready for the upcoming Midsummer Classic in Philadelphia in mid-July. If so, it would mark his 12th career All-Star selection and first appearance since 2019.

White Sox manager Will Venable said Munetaka Murakami (hamstring) took on-field batting practice on Thursday and is close to starting a minor league rehab assignment.

Venable didn’t offer an exact timeline for Murakami to kick off a rehab assignment, adding that he’ll need to run the bases before he’s officially cleared. The original expectation was that he would miss 4-6 weeks after being diagnosed with a Grade 2 hamstring strain back in late May. The fact that he’s progressed to on-field hitting means he’s getting close to game action again. There should be a definitive update on his status in the coming days. Fantasy managers should anticipate Murakami making it back to Chicago sometime around this month’s All-Star break.

Chandler Simpson was scratched from the lineup for Friday’s game against the – due to right finger soreness.

Rays manager Kevin Cash told reporters the move was merely precautionary after Simpson jammed his fingers sliding into second base earlier this week. He’s day-to-day heading into the final two games of a series against the Astros this weekend.
