Justin Crawford was a late scratch from the Phillies’ starting lineup on Friday night due to soreness in his left knee.

The issue isn’t believed to be major and the 22-year-old outfielder is considered day-to-day. Derek Hill will start in his place in center field on Friday evening against Jack Flaherty and the Tigers at Comerica Park.

Willi Castro is on the bench for the Rockies for a third straight game Friday.

Castro had started all but three games since the All-Star break until Tuesday. Now he’s absent for three in a row. It’s not a bad idea for the Rockies to go to their younger players, but it is surprising to see Castro completely erased from the mix like this. He’s hitting .259/.331/.496 with eight homers in the second half.

Joshua Báez is starting in left field against a right-hander Friday versus the Rockies.

Thank goodness we don’t get to miss out on Báez at Coors. He had sat in favor of Bryan Torres the last two times the Cardinals faced righties. Torres is still in the lineup tonight, but he’s playing second base over José Fermin.

Shohei Ohtani remains out of the Dodgers lineup Friday against the Nationals.

The Dodgers downplayed any real sense of concern about Ohtani’s issues last night, but now he’s absent from the DH spot again. Alex Call is again starting there with the Nationals throwing a lefty. Dalton Rushing figures to enter a game once a righty takes over.

Shane McClanahan said he’s hoping to pitch again this season after going on the IL with forearm tightness.

McClanahan said it was more of a tightness issue than a pain issue. If he makes it back during the regular season, it’d almost surely be for just one tuneup start ahead of the postseason. It’ll probably be a few days before it comes clear whether that is realistic or not.

Pirates recalled RHP Isaac Mattson from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Cardinals activate RHP Andre Pallante from the 15-day injured list.

Pallante didn’t make a rehab start while on the IL with elbow inflammation, but the Cardinals probably feel that facing the Rockies provides a similar experience. He’s starting at Coors tonight.

Cardinals optioned RHP Ryan Fernandez to Triple-A Memphis.

Fernandez gets dropped after pitching 2 2/3 scoreless innings the last two days. He has a 3.52 ERA in 23 innings this season, but the former Rule 5 pick hasn’t been able to reestablish a real role with the Cardinals following a tough 2025.

Bryson Stott has been scratched from Friday’s lineup against the Braves due to a personal matter.

It was a little surprising to see Stott in the lineup versus Chris Sale in the first place, but the Phillies surely wanted his defense on the field. Bryan De La Cruz has replaced him, with Edmundo Sosa moving from left field to third base.

The Astros are using Taylor Trammell and Lamonte Wade Jr. in the outfield corners over Cam Smith for a second straight game Friday.

It’s definitely not looking good for Smith at the moment, though a couple of nice games could always change things. It’s not like Trammell or Wade is hitting, and Smith is the best defensive outfielder of the three.
