The Red Sox are designating Danny Coulombe for assignment, sources told MassLive.com’s Chris Cotillo.

It seems like really weird timing, as Coulombe pitched two scoreless frames to finish off Boston’s 4-0 shutout of the Mets on Saturday. However, the appearance was his 29th, and he’s about to start collecting bonuses upon No. 30 of the year. The Red Sox might give Tyler Samaniego another look in his place.
Mariners call up elite pitching prospect Anderson
The Seattle Mariners called up top pitching prospect Kade Anderson, who is expected to start against the Chicago Cubs this Saturday. Eric Samulski emphasizes why he should be added in all fantasy formats.

Samuel Basallo is out of the lineup for Saturday’s game against the Rays.

It’s a routine day off for Basallo with Carlos Narváez handling the catching duties in this one. He’s gone 1-for-10 in three games since returning from the injured list earlier this week. It may take him a little time to knock off the rust, but he should be an impactful fantasy contributor playing almost everyday for the final five weeks of the season, especially since the Orioles have turned things around from an offensive standpoint.

Masyn Winn is on the bench for the third straight game on Saturday against the Phillies.

There hasn’t been any reporting to indicate that Winn is dealing with any physical issues, as the Cardinals continue rolling with JJ Wetherholt at shortstop with José Fermín at second base in this one.

Victor Bericoto is hitting leadoff against the Red Sox on Saturday.

Bericoto gets his opportunity atop San Francisco’s lineup to face lefty Patrick Sandoval after Drew Gilbert spent a couple days in that spot earlier this week. The hard-hitting 24-year-old has homered four times in 31 games during his rookie campaign, but lacks the on-base skillset of a traditional top-of-the-order table-setter. Still, he figures to get some chances against left-handed starters down the home stretch.

Rockies sent LHP Parker Mushinski outright to Triple-A Albuquerque.

Mushinski will stick around with Colorado as emergency left-handed relief depth after going unclaimed on waivers. The 30-year-old allowed just two runs over 6 2/3 innings for the Rockies prior to being designated for assignment earlier this week.

Nationals claimed RHP Matt Waldron off waivers from the Blue Jays.

Waldron heads to his third different organization this season after being cut loose by the Blue Jays earlier this week. The 29-year-old figures to operate in a swingman-type role for the Nationals over the final five weeks of the season. He’s posted a bloated 7.54 ERA across 37 innings of work in the big leagues this year.

Nationals transferred LHP Connelly Early to the 60-day injured list.

Early’s odds of returning before the end of the season took a major hit when he experienced forearm tightness during a live batting practice session earlier this month. The 24-year-old has been out with posterior elbow inflammation since late June and remains without a clear return timetable following this latest setback. The procedural move opens up a spot on Washington’s 40-man roster to claim starter Matt Waldron off waivers.

Shohei Ohtani (knee) progressed to facing hitters in a live batting practice session on Saturday.

Ohtani remains without a definitive timeline to return to pitching in games for the Dodgers, but the fact that he’s progressed to facing hitters again means that he’s getting close. It’s purely speculation, but it feels like the Dodgers are going to want to give him a couple outings in the final month to make sure that he’s ready before putting him back on the mound in the postseason. There should be additional clarity on his timetable at some point relatively soon.

Ryan Weathers was removed from Saturday’s start against the Blue Jays with left forearm discomfort.

Weathers left with a trainer after recording one out and allowing three hits to open the fourth inning. He was charged with two runs on eight hits in the abbreviated outing. He struck out three and didn’t hand out a free pass. The 26-year-old southpaw is headed for additional evaluation and imaging to determine the severity of the issue. He’s managed to avoid the injured list in his Yankees debut this season, but that appears to be in play given this latest development. He’s in obvious jeopardy of missing his next start against the Red Sox on Friday. There should be an update on his status later this weekend.

Cardinals recalled LHP Quinn Mathews from Triple-A Memphis.

Mathews returns to the big leagues with both Andre Pallante (elbow) and Hunter Dobbins (forearm) landing on the injured list in rapid succession. The 25-year-old southpaw has allowed three runs with a 10/6 K/BB ratio across nine innings of work in a pair of starts over the last couple weeks. He figures to have a rotation spot with the Cardinals for at least a couple weeks and offers enough strikeout upside to be interesting for fantasy purposes. The big question is whether he can throw enough strikes to be a consistent starter at the highest level.

Cardinals placed RHP Hunter Dobbins on the 15-day injured list with right forearm tightness.

Dobbins is the second St. Louis starter to hit the shelf in the last 48 hours after they went nearly two years without losing a single member of their rotation to the injured list. He was lifted from Friday’s start against the Phillies in the fifth inning. The 26-year-old has posted a 3.67 ERA and 52/24 K/BB ratio across 54 innings at the highest level this season. It’s unclear how much time he’ll miss, but there’s a strong possibility his season is over with only five weeks remaining on the calendar.
