Ronald Acuña Jr. (hamstring) will begin a rehab assignment in the Florida Complex League on Monday.

While their major league teammates are getting a few days off, both Acuña and Ha-Seong Kim (finger) will begin their rehab assignments. They will both likely play multiple games in the complex league this week while all affiliates are on a break, and there is a chance Acuña Jr., who has been out since June 10, will return right after the All-Star break concludes. At worst, it seems like the 28-year-old could be back in Atlanta’s outfield by next week.

Acuña has gone 0-for-6 with two strikeouts across a pair of contests for Atlanta’s lone minor-league affiliate still playing organized baseball during the All-Star break. The 28-year-old franchise cornerstone appears likely to rejoin the Braves lineup when they kick off the second half with a three-game series against the Rangers on Friday.

Kim has gone 2-for-4 with a homer across two contests during the All-Star break. It’s unclear whether the Braves want him to continue facing minor-league arms for a couple additional games at Triple-A Gwinnett since he was really struggling at the plate before hitting the injured list earlier this month.

Acuña played five innings in right field during his first rehab contest. The 28-year-old fantasy superstar appears on track to return to Atlanta’s lineup following the All-Star break. He’s been brought along slowly in his recovery from a left hamstring issue that has forced him to the injured list on a pair of occasions since early May. He’ll get in a handful of additional rehab contests in the Florida Coast League before his next steps come into focus.

There’s no way to sugarcoat the obvious that Kim has been a complete non-factor at the dish in his Atlanta debut this season. The 30-year-old was hitting .068 (5-for-73) with zero homers and one steal in 82 plate appearances before hitting the shelf with right middle finger inflammation last week. There’s still time for him to turn things around and the Braves are obviously hoping that the minor-league reset will jump-start that process.

Braves manager Walt Weiss told reporters Ronald Acuña Jr. (hamstring) could begin a minor league rehab assignment next week.

Weiss confirmed last week that Acuña was a long shot to return to Atlanta’s lineup before the All-Star break. However, it sounds like there’s optimism he’ll make it back shortly afterwards. The 28-year-old has been brought along slowly in his recovery from a left hamstring strain that’s necessitated a pair of injured list stint since early May. There should be a clearer idea of his return timeline once he gets into a couple minor league contests, most likely in the Rookie-level Florida Coast League, at some point next week.

It’s a positive sign that Acuña is back with the club and feeling well enough to swing the stick, even in a simulated surrounding. The 28-year-old is unlikely to return before the All-Star break according to manager Walt Weiss, but it does appear likely the former MVP will be back in action well before the end of July, assuming no setbacks, of course.

Braves placed SS Ha-Seong Kim on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to July 1, with right middle finger inflammation.

Kim has barely played for Atlanta recently with Jorge Mateo basically taking over the starting shortstop role. The 30-year-old has endured a brutal season at the dish, hitting .068 (5-for-73) with zero homers and one steal in 82 plate appearances since making his season debut back on May 12. It’ll be Mateo and rookie Jim Jarvis filling the void at shortstop in his absence.

There’s zero incentive for Atlanta to rush him back too quickly and risk a setback, but it sounds like there’s a chance he’ll make it back in mid-to-late July.

MLB.com’s Mark Bowman adds that Atlanta is going to exercise a fair bit of caution with Acuña’s rehabilitation process since the hamstring injury is in the same spot as the previous strain that kept him sidelined for three weeks earlier this season. The 28-year-old fantasy superstar was diagnosed with a Grade 1 strain last week. It’s hardly an official return timetable, but it sounds like fantasy managers shouldn’t anticipate Acuña returning until after next month’s All-Star break.

Kim has been getting more playing time again with Ronald Acuña Jr.'s absence opening up an outfield spot for Mauricio Dubón, but he’s not doing anything with it. He’s gone hitless in four straight games and is just 5-for-59 overall since returning from his finger injury last month.

Lockler, 25, has slashed an impressive .313/.394/.502 with eight homers and 36 RBI in 241 plate appearances over 54 games at Triple-A Reno this season. He should get an opportunity to see regular action at first base and could make for an interesting deep league or NL-only pickup.
