Tigers activate Gleyber Torres for Monday return

The Tigers drew nine walks in the game and Torres had four of them himself. He scored three runs on the afternoon and also came up with a two-run double in the fourth. Torres was pretty quiet after coming off the IL two weeks ago, but he’s now amassed nine RBI over his last five games.

It’s Torres’s fourth career five-RBI game. He knocked in six runs while homering twice on Aug. 12, 2019 and then drove in five runs twice in 2022. He had been without an RBI while going 4-for-22 in seven games since coming off the injured list last week.

Torres completed five innings at the keystone in his rehab debut. He should make it back to Detroit at some point shortly after the All-Star break after hitting the injured list with an oblique strain back in mid-June. He lost a month to a different oblique issue earlier this season.

Torres injured himself on a swing on Monday and will head back to the injured list after spending a month there earlier in the season with the same injury. Given that he reinjured himself, we’d expect Torres to be sidelined at least a month this time as well, if not more, to ensure he heals fully. Hao-Yu Lee will be the primary starting second baseman in the meantime.

This is Torres’ second straight game on the bench after he left Monday’s game with pain in his left side following a swing. The Tigers have an off day on Thursday, so they likely want to give their second baseman at least one more day to rest before deciding if they need to play him on the injured list. Torres has already missed a month with an oblique strain in his left side and was hitting .341/.413/.585 in 11 games in June with two home runs, eight runs scored, and seven RBI. Another stint on the injured list would be a bummer. Hao-Yu Lee will continue to start at second base and bat eighth on Wednesday.

Torres made an early exit from Monday’s series opener with left side pain following an awkward swing. The 29-year-old second baseman will presumably undergo imaging to determine whether he’s dealing with another oblique issue, which caused him to miss time earlier this season. He’s day-to-day for the moment with rookie Hao-Yu Lee filling in at second base. It certainly wouldn’t be a surprise to see Torres hit the injured list at some point later this week.

Torres was lifted for a defensive replacement in the second inning after striking out in his lone at-bat of the contest. He appeared to tweak something on an awkward swing and was replaced afterwards by rookie Hao-Yu Lee at second base. There should be an update on his status shortly.

Torres has been hot since returning from the injured list in early June as he’s hitting .379 across seven games. The veteran second baseman has hit first, second, or third in every game he has started for Detroit this season. He’s running the highest walk rate of his career so far in 2026.

Torres is hitting .538 (7-for-13) with one homer and three RBI in three games since returning from the injured list earlier this week. The 29-year-old second baseman appears poised to continue leading off for Detroit with rookie star Kevin McGonigle hitting second.

Torres started a three-run uprising with a one-out single off of Bryan Woo in the third inning and scored the Tigers’ first run a Kevin McGonigle hit into a fielder’s choice. He has collected seven hits including a home run in three games since returning from the injured list and has injected much-needed life into the Tigers’ offense. For the season, he’s slashing .287/.405/.388 with three homers and 14 RBI in 158 plate appearances.
