Tyler Holton to serve as opener on Friday night

Holton has worked in 13 games while throwing 13 innings, so it’s likely that the 29-year-old will only go an inning or two in this outing.

The 29-year-old southpaw allowed an infield single in the opening inning but faced the minimum after inducing an inning-ending double play ball. He returned for a second frame though and that’s where trouble ensued as Nick Gonzales belted a solo homer to start the inning and two batters later Jared Triolo added a two-run blast to center field. After two absolutely brilliant seasons in the Tigers’ bullpen, Holton has been very pedestrian in 2025 — posting a troublesome 4.72 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and a 30/8 K/BB ratio over 34 1/3 innings. The biggest change is that he has already served up eight home runs. He allowed seven and nine, respectively, over each of the previous two seasons.

Detroit wants to avoid having Gipson-Long face a series of left-handed bats atop Cincinnati’s lineup, so Holton will work the opening frame before passing the baton during Sunday’s early-afternoon showdown at Comerica Park.

It’s not often that the 28-year-old southpaw struggles, but he wasn’t at his best in this one. Pithing with the Tigers trailing 1-0 in the sixth inning he gave up a pair of infield singles to Austin Slater and Edgar Quero before serving up a game-changing three-run homer to Michael A. Taylor. Holton now sports an underwhelming 4.39 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and a 24/8 K/BB ratio over 26 2/3 innings on the season.

It’ll be a bullpen game for the Tigers in place of an injured Casey Mize (hamstring) with Keider Montero coming up to make a bulk relief appearance. Holton figures to work the opening frame or two before turning the ball over to the rest of Detroit’s bullpen.

Skubal will be on four days’ rest Sunday. The Tigers will be well rested for the Guardians after using Brant Hurter for just 29 pitches on Wednesday and not needing to turn to Reese Olson at any point.

Holton will throw anywhere from one to three innings depending on how well he does against the Astros lineup. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch described Detroit’s pitching plan before the series as pitching chaos. Holton will start the chaos in Game 2 as the Tigers look to knock off the Astros.

Tyler Holton got the win for working hitless eighth and ninth innings. Holton is clearly the reliever the Tigers trust most and rightfully so, but Foley continues to get most of the saves. He has 10 in 16 appearances since Aug. 15.

Holton gave up a two-out triple to Gunnar Henderson in a 1-0 game before rebounding to strike out Anthony Santander. The appearance tonight was Holton’s 60th of the year. He’s allowed 21 earned runs over 85 2/3 innings on the season. Last year, he made 59 appearances and allowed 20 earned runs in 85 1/3 innings. Quite simply, he’s been one of MLB’s most valuable relievers for a second straight year.

Holton’s save was his seventh of the season. Jason Foley is the Tigers’ closer, but Holton will continue to get save opportunities in the right matchups. He’ll also start games as an opener. It’s a fluid role as Tigers manager AJ Hinch uses him as Swiss army knife. Holton is 5-1 with a 2.35 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 61 strikeouts in 80 1/3 innings.
