MassLive.com’s Sean McAdam reports talks are “dead” between the Red Sox and Marlins for shortstop Otto Lopez.

McAdam spoke with a league source that indicated the chances of a deal to send Lopez to Boston are “dead” and it appears highly unlikely the Marlins will trade him. It’s purely speculation, but the Red Sox figure to be extremely reluctant to move either of their top prospects in shortstop Franklin Arias, who is tearing the cover off the ball since being promoted to Triple-A Worcester recently, and righty Anthony Eyanson, who struck out a season-high 10 batters at Double-A Portland on Friday night. The Red Sox have been linked to multiple shortstops ahead of next week’s trade deadline, but it seems highly unlikely that Lopez is going to Boston, or anywhere else at the moment.

The Red Sox are acquiring Adley Rutschman from the Orioles, sources told ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

Apparently, the medicals were approved. The Orioles will get Anthony Eyanson (Boston’s No. 1 pitching prospect), 2025 first-rounder Kyson Witherspoon, Carlos Narváez and more, according to the Baltimore Sun’s Jacob Calvin Meyer. The Red Sox will have Rutschman under control through 2027. He’s still on the IL for now, but he’ll take over from Connor Wong as the starter when healthy. Jake Rogers is also in the deal going to Boston, so he’ll back up Wong for now. For Baltimore, the move clears the way for Samuel Basallo to spend the next several years as a starting catcher.

Red Sox SS prospect Franklin Arias is at second base for Triple-A Worcester on Saturday.

Arias finds himself at second base for the second consecutive contest. It’s a common practice for organizations to expand a prospect’s defensive horizons before reaching the majors to open up additional avenues to at-bats. Technically, the Red Sox still have Trevor Story, who is coming off sports hernia surgery, at shortstop. They’ve also been linked to several available options ahead of the trade deadline. Arias has experienced a stratospheric rise this season and hasn’t stopped hitting since arriving in Worcester a couple weeks ago. His time is coming, but it probably isn’t going to be until next year.

Boston’s top pitching prospect by a country mile, Eyanson has compiled a microscopic 1.32 ERA and 94/26 K/BB ratio across 68 1/3 innings during his professional debut after being selected in the third round of last year’s draft. The 21-year-old is unlikely to reach the big leagues this season given the organization’s pitching depth at the highest level, but he could factor into their rotation plans at some point early next year.

The Athletic’s Jen McCaffrey reports that the Red Sox are looking to add more infielders, even after acquiring Curtis Mead.

Of course, Mead is sidelined for the next 6-8 weeks with a fractured wrist, so that plays a part in it. All of Trevor Story (sports hernia), Marcelo Mayer (forearm stress reaction), and Isiah Kiner-Falefa (forearm stress reaction) are on the injured list as well, so infield depth is a need. The Red Sox have been linked to Otto Lopez, which would require a sizable offer that “would have to start with” Boston’s second-ranked prospect RHP Anthony Eyanson.

The Red Sox are promoting Franklin Arias to Triple-A Worcester.

Arias passed every test in three months in Double-A, hitting .319/.407/.581 with 18 homers and just 46 strikeouts in 327 plate appearances. There still isn’t much reason to think he’ll reach the majors this year, but he’s not too far away from taking over as Boston’s shortstop. Trevor Story and Marcelo Mayer might wind up battling it out for second base next year.

The 27-year-old middle infielder has been an unexpected breakout sensation, delivering first-round fantasy value this season, slashing .335/.368/.505 with 61 runs scored, nine homers, 46 RBI and 18 stolen bases across 419 plate appearances through 97 games. It’ll be Javier Sanoja taking over at shortstop in his place on Monday night.

Lopez took a groundball off his finger on Saturday and has had a little discomfort holding a bat. His finger is taped, and he said he could be available off the bench on Sunday, which makes us believe this should not be a long-term situation. Javier Sanoja will start at shortstop in his place while Leo Jimenez starts at third base and will bat sixth for the Fish against Brewers’ left-hander Robert Gasser.

Red Sox RHP prospect Anthony Eyanson recorded one out in relief on Sunday in the All-Star Futures Game at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.

Eyanson was summoned to record the final out of the fourth inning with the potential go-ahead run in scoring position. He walked Ethan Salas before generating an inning-ending fly ball to center field from Luis Peña. The 21-year-old righty has been one of this season’s biggest pitching breakout prospects, posting a pristine 1.29 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 71/20 K/BB ratio across 55 2/3 innings between Double-A Portland and High-A Greenville. He’s routinely sitting in the mid-90s with his fastball, averaging 93.6 mph in this showcase, and should continue to move quickly through Boston’s system after being selected in the third round of last year’s MLB Draft.

Padres manager Craig Stammen told reporters Nick Pivetta (elbow) was able to continue throwing in the bullpen after exiting a minor league rehab start with Low-A Lake Elsinore on Tuesday.

Stammen added that Pivetta was able to throw 30 pitches in the bullpen after experiencing some discomfort throughout his warmup process. It’s an encouraging update after Pivetta abruptly exited his first rehab outing. The 33-year-old is working his way back from a flexor strain that put him on the shelf back in mid-April. He’ll be reevaluated later this week to determine that he’s fine from a physical standpoint to continue his rehab assignment. It doesn’t sound like a worst-case scenario. Still, it’s going to be challenging for Pivetta to make it back to San Diego before the regular season concludes.
