White Sox recalled C Edgar Quero from Triple-A Charlotte.

The White Sox tried to replace him with Joey Bart at the trade deadline, but Bart broke his hand last night. So much for that plan. Quero, hitting .194/.257/.235 this year, is back in the spotlight.
'Something has to change' with Yankees' leadership
Dan Le Batard shares why noise surrounding the Yankees' leadership will only continue to grow following New York's sweep out of the ALDS at the hand of its division rival, with Jason Benetti adding his thoughts.

With Tommy Pham (calf) back, Quero will return to the minors. Quero got a real chance in 2026 as the White Sox’s starting catcher after Kyle Teel began the year injured. Instead of capitalizing, the 23-year-old slashed .203/.284/.257 with three home runs in 217 plate appearances. It remains to be seen what kind of future he has with the White Sox.

Quero has already appeared in 65 games for the White Sox this season, slashing .208/.279/.262 with three homers and 19 RBI in 210 plate appearances. He replaces the injured Tommy Pham (calf) on the White Sox’ active roster.

Quero is down after the White Sox officially added Jake Rogers to the active roster. The 23-year-old backstop has not lived up to his prospect hype thus far, and it may take a change in organizations for him to get enough opportunity for him to do so.
  • CWS Catcher #26
With Joey Bart breaking a bone in his hand after being drilled by a pitch on Thursday evening, the White Sox once again have a need for extra depth behind the plate. Quero was just optioned to Triple-A Carlotte on Tuesday after Bart’s arrival, but he’ll return to share the load behind the plate with Drew Romo.
  • CWS Catcher #26
This seemed likely after the White Sox traded for Joey Bart on Monday, but it is noteworthy nonetheless. Quero was a top 100 prospect, but the 23-year-old has a .245/.308/.318 slash line with seven home runs in 596 MLB plate appearances so far while playing below-average defense behind the plate.

Venable classified it as a broad range, but it sounds like Teel will be out until at least early September and there’s a possibility he’s done for the remainder of the regular season. The 24-year-old backstop was diagnosed with a high ankle sprain after suffering the injury on a play at home plate during Monday’s game against the Rangers. It’ll be Drew Romo and Edgar Quero handling the catching duties in his absence. It would probably make sense for Chicago to pursue a temporary veteran stopgap at the trade deadline based on this latest development.
  • CWS Catcher #26
Quero had his just .230/.299/.295 in 15 games since being sent down, though that .594 OPS is still considerably better than his .486 OPS in 55 games before losing his spot. He’ll split time with Drew Romo while Kyle Teel is out.
  • CWS Catcher #26
With Kyle Teel (knee) back off the injured list, the White Sox decided to keep Drew Romo as the backup. Quero has hit .187/.253/.233 in 172 plate appearances this season and just doesn’t provide enough defensive value to remain as the backup.
  • CWS Catcher #26
This could have been an awkward bobblehead day if not for Kyle Teel’s setback, as there’s a good chance Quero, who has been splitting time evenly with Drew Romo, would have been in Triple-A at this point. The home run off Framber Valdez was just his second of the year, and he’s batting .196/.280/.259 in 134 plate appearances.
  • CWS Catcher #8
It’s an unfortunate setback for Teel as he appeared to be close to making it back to Chicago for his season debut before suffering the injury during a rehab contest for Triple-A Charlotte over the weekend. The 24-year-old backstop will be on the shelf until at least early June before he’s potentially an option for the White Sox. It’s quickly turning into a bit of a lost season for Teel, who entered the year as one of the top young catchers in the game. Drew Romo and Edgar Quero will continue handling the catching duties for Chicago in his absence.

Jeimer Candelario has elected free agency.

Candelario surprisingly cracked the Angels’ Opening Day roster in 2026, but was designated for assignment in early April after starting out 2-for-18 (.111) in his first seven games. He went on to have a solid season at Triple-A Salt Lake though, slashing .281/.377/.509 with 15 homers and 56 RBI in 387 plate appearances.

Max Kranick has elected free agency.

The 29-year-old right-hander made 17 forgettable appearances at the MLB level for the Nationals during the 2026 campaign, compiling a 9.33 ERA, 2.18 WHIP and an 11/13 K/BB ratio over 18 1/3 innings of work. He’s now free to start peddling his wares on the open market.

Justin Lawrence has elected free agency.

The 31-year-old right-hander will get a head start on free agency. Lawrence had a disastrous 2026 season at the MLB level, registering a 7.34 ERA, 1.95 WHIP and a 43/28 K/BB ratio over 34 1/3 innings in 37 appearances between the Pirates, Twins and Nationals. It’s difficult to envision him landing anything other than a minor league deal with an invitation to big league camp.

Guardians’ skipper Stephen Vogt told reporters on Thursday that Gavin Williams will be available out of the bullpen for Game 4 of the ALDS against the White Sox.

With their season on the line once again on Thursday, the Guardians will do anything necessary to survive — which includes using their ace out of the bullpen if they have to. Williams threw 98 pitches while striking out 11 batters over five innings in Game 2 on Monday. In a best-case scenario, the Guardians would love to save him for a decisive fifth game back in Cleveland, but that requires a win on Thursday to get there first and they may not have that luxury.

Paul Goldschmidt told reporters after Wednesday’s elimination loss that he would love to continue his playing career.

The 39-year-old impending free agent told Jon Heyman of the New York Post, “I love competing” when asked about his future. It remains to be seen if he’ll be able to find an opportunity that fits what he’s looking for. That free agent search could be made even more complicated by MLB’s labor dispute. Goldschmidt slashed a solid .252/.313/.452 with 18 homers and 52 RBI over 380 plate appearances for the Yankees in 2026 while doing most of his damage against left-handed pitching.

Austin Hedges will start behind the plate for the Guardians in Game 4 of the ALDS against the White Sox on Thursday evening.

The Guardians were able to stave off elimination with a victory in Game 3 on Wednesday and they’ll run back an almost identical lineup as they try to do the same in Game 4. The only change will be Hedges catching instead of Patrick Bailey. Here’s the full lineup for the Guardians in a must-win spot against Hagen Smith and company on Thursday evening in Chicago: Steven Kwan (CF), Jose Ramirez (3B), Chase DeLauter (RF), Jo Adell (DH), Nathaniel Lowe (1B), Angel Martinez (LF), Travis Bazzana (2B), Hedges (C) and Brayan Rocchio (SS).

Sam Antonacci is not in the White Sox’ starting lineup for Game 4 of the ALDS against the Guardians on Thursday evening.

With left-hander Parker Messick taking the ball for the Guardians, Antonacci will begin this one on the bench for the White Sox. Fellow left-handed hitters Andrew Benintendi and Tristan Peters will also take a seat for the Southsiders. Here’s how Will Venable’s club will line up as they look to punch their ticket to the ALCS on Thursday: Chase Meidroth (2B), Randal Grichuk (LF), Miguel Vargas (3B), Munetaka Murakami (1B), Tommy Pham (DH), Brenton Doyle (CF), Kyle Teel (C), Braden Montgomery (RF) and Colson Montgomery (SS).

MLB has proposed shortening the regular season from 162 to 154 games in CBA negotiations with the Players Association.

Also coming along with that would be the expansion of the Division Series from five to seven games, and the ability for high seeds to pick their opponents in the Wild Card and Division Series rounds.

Tyler Mahle said he’d “be crazy not to want to play” for the Atlanta Braves next season.

Mahle was a tremendous deadline acquisition for the Braves this year, pitching to a 1.99 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, and 48/9 K/BB ratio in 54 1/3 innings after the trade. He also allowed just three runs (two earned) on nine hits in 13 1/3 playoff innings while posting a 10/2 K/BB ratio. Increased reliance on his splitter and throwing more fastballs up in the zone were crucial to his success, so hopefully any team he signs with would try to replicate that.

Teruaki Sato won the Nippon Professional Baseball Triple Crown.

Sato is just the third NPB hitter to win a Triple Crown this century, with Munetaka Murakami winning the most recent won in 2022. The 27-year-old Sato hit .308/.385/.613 in 142 games with 39 home runs, 106 RBI, and eight steals. Sato is a potential target of MLB teams this offseason, pending what happens with labor negotiations, and Jon Heyman had reported in September that the Mets, Yankees, Dodgers, and Phillies had all already been linked to the third baseman. Many people believe his MLB future, like Murakami, will be at first base, but he also has some experience in the corner outfield as well. Sato went 3-for-10 in this year’s World Baseball Classic with a double, three walks, and three batted balls hit over 100 mph.
