White Sox optioned C Edgar Quero to Triple-A Charlotte

With Kyle Teel (knee) back off the injured list, the White Sox decided to keep Drew Romo as the backup. Quero has hit .187/.253/.233 in 172 plate appearances this season and just doesn’t provide enough defensive value to remain as the backup.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Trent Grisham (hamstring) is likely to return during their upcoming six-game homestand next week.

Boone added that Grisham is likely to play in at least one minor league rehab contest prior to returning to New York’s lineup. The 29-year-old outfielder hit the injured list with a right hamstring strain back on June 13 after slashing .232/.341/.406 with eight homers and six steals as the Yankees’ primary leadoff hitter against right-handed pitching. It sounds like he’s on track to make it back at some point next week with all-or-nothing rookie slugger Spencer Jones likely headed back to the minors as the corresponding move.

Ryan McMahon (illness) has resumed baseball activities.

McMahon hit the injured list with a throat infection earlier this week. The 31-year-old infielder should return to New York’s bench mix at some point next week.

White Sox recalled LHP Tyler Schweitzer from Triple-A Charlotte.

Schweitzer returns to Chicago’s relief mix after spending six weeks back in the minors. The 25-year-old rookie southpaw has allowed four runs over four innings for the White Sox this season. He’ll operate in low-leverage spots as a lefty matchup specialist.

White Sox optioned RHP David Sandlin to Triple-A Charlotte.

Sandlin heads back to the minors after picking up a win on Friday night against the Royals, his former organization, by allowing one run over six innings. The 25-year-old rookie holds a pedestrian 6.05 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 20/10 K/BB ratio across 19 1/3 innings during his first taste of the big leagues. He’s an intriguing arm to monitor, but isn’t exactly a fantasy-relevant option at this stage of his career.

Masataka Yoshida is at DH and hitting leadoff against the Yankees on Saturday.

Yoshida draws his second consecutive start in the leadoff spot against a right-handed starter while Mickey Gasper got a turn atop the lineup during Friday’s contest. Yoshida is hitting .200 (10-for-50) with zero homers and three RBI over his last 215 games. He’s been a complete non-factor for fantasy purposes this season and figures to lose playing time once Romy Gonzalez (shoulder) is back from the injured list later this weekend.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. is out of the lineup for Saturday’s contest against the Red Sox.

Chisholm was at the epicenter of a bizarre lollipop controversy earlier this week, but he’s had a solid month at the plate from a fantasy perspective, launching six homers and swiping 10 bases, despite hitting just .189 (14-for-74) since the start of June. The 28-year-old takes a seat with rookie lefty Jake Bennett taking the ball for the Red Sox at Fenway Park on Saturday afternoon. It’ll be José Caballero filling in at second base.

Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy told reporters Romy Gonzalez (shoulder) won’t be activated from the injured list for Saturday’s game against the Yankees.

All signs point to Gonzalez making his season debut by facing veteran lefty Carlos Rodón during Sunday’s series finale at Fenway Park. The 29-year-old missed the first three months of the year recovering from shoulder surgery. His presence should provide a significant lift for the Red Sox against left-handed starters.

Dillon Dingler is out of the lineup for Saturday’s contest against the Astros.

No surprise here with a quick early-afternoon turnaround after Dingler handled the catching duties during Friday night’s series opener. The 27-year-old backstop somehow wasn’t a finalist for the American League in All-Star balloting, but he deserves to be there on the strength of a 19-homer breakthrough campaign. It’ll be Jake Rogers behind the plate on Saturday afternoon at Comerica Park.

Yordan Alvarez is out of the lineup for Saturday’s showdown against the Tigers.

Alvarez celebrates his 29th birthday by taking a seat for the just the second time all season after going hitless in three consecutive games. It’s his first time out of Houston’s lineup since May 24. The 29-year-old slugger has been arguably the best pure hitter in baseball this season, slashing .314/.427/.619 with an American League-leading 25 homers and 56 RBI through 83 games. His 182 wRC+ is tops in baseball by a considerable margin. It’ll be Yainer Diaz taking a turn at DH with Brice Matthews handling left field.

Evan Carter (oblique) went 2-for-2 with a solo homer on Friday in a minor league rehab game for Double-A Frisco.

Carter clobbered a leadoff homer and reached base safely in all three of his plate appearances during his rehab debut. He also logged five innings in center field. The 23-year-old will likely get a couple additional contests under his belt to get back up to speed before returning to the Rangers lineup. He’s been out with a minor right oblique strain since mid-June.
