White Sox send Quero down to Triple-A

This could have been an awkward bobblehead day if not for Kyle Teel’s setback, as there’s a good chance Quero, who has been splitting time evenly with Drew Romo, would have been in Triple-A at this point. The home run off Framber Valdez was just his second of the year, and he’s batting .196/.280/.259 in 134 plate appearances.

It’s an unfortunate setback for Teel as he appeared to be close to making it back to Chicago for his season debut before suffering the injury during a rehab contest for Triple-A Charlotte over the weekend. The 24-year-old backstop will be on the shelf until at least early June before he’s potentially an option for the White Sox. It’s quickly turning into a bit of a lost season for Teel, who entered the year as one of the top young catchers in the game. Drew Romo and Edgar Quero will continue handling the catching duties for Chicago in his absence.

There were multiple late-inning blasts that felt as if they would define the game, but Quero’s homer was the one that ended it. He’s been spelling Drew Romo behind the plate lately, but Kyle Teel should take back starting catcher duties once he returns from the IL.

Quero has seen his playing time dry up a bit, and has now sat three of the last five games in favor of Reese McGuire. That’ll happen when you hit .161/.273/.179 in your first 19 games. Outside of dynasty leagues, Quero isn’t a must-hold — and he probably should be benched at this point in most fantasy formats.

The second strikeout ended the game with the tying and go-ahead runs on base in the ninth. Quero has opened the season 4-for-23 with no extra-base hits or RBI, and it might be worth wondering if the White Sox will keep him in the majors after Kyle Teel returns. Quero just turned 23 today and still needs polish defensively. He might be better off catching regularly in Triple-A than backing up Teel and getting at-bats at DH in the majors.

Teel is back catching and doing some light running after getting hurt running the bases in the WBC. It’s possible he’ll return as soon as his 10 days are up. Until then, Edgar Quero will do most of the catching.

Teel was injured while running the bases in a win over Team USA in the World Baseball Classic on Tuesday. That timeline means that Teel could return to games at the end of April. Whether that’s in Triple-A or in Chicago is unclear at this time, but he should still be able ot play the vast majority of the season with the White Sox. Edgar Quero will become the clear starting catcher for the White Sox until Teel returns, but we would caution against getting too invested in fantasy. Quero will post a decent batting average, but he hits at the bottom of the lineup, doesn’t steal bases, and has very little power. It’s a bit of an empty batting average profile on a mediocre team.

It definitely looked like an IL-type injury if it had been the regular season, and Opening Day is now probably in question for the 24-year-old. If Teel is sidelined then, the White Sox will likely carry just two catchers in Edgar Quero and Korey Lee. They’ve been considering putting all three on the roster, since Quero and Teel were expected to see considerable time at DH.

The 22-year-old backstop opened the scoring in the ballgame with an RBI single off of Brandon Sproat in the top half of the first inning. He then added a run-scoring double off of Abner Uribe in the third inning that made it 2-0. Unfortunately, that would be the extent of their offense in the game. Quero is off to a blistering start this spring, hitting .538 (7-for-13) with a whopping eight RBI.

Quero hit a pair of two-run singles. The 22-year-old backstop was the subject of trade rumors this winter as Kyle Teel appears to be their answer at catcher, but there’s a decent chance he’ll still get some solid playing time in 2026.
