Troy Melton allowed three runs and struck out four batters over 4 1/3 innings in a no-decision against the White Sox on Saturday.

Melton opened the game allowing the first two batters to reach and surrendered a run on a base hit before getting out of the first inning. Melton continued to labor through the next two innings, stranding two runners in the second before giving up a pair of runs on three hits in the third. He completed a scoreless fourth inning, then recorded one out in the fifth, departing with a runner on at 87 pitches. He struck out four. The 25-year-old right-hander had gone his previous three starts without allowing a run. He’ll take a 1.71 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, and a 73/25 K/BB ratio across 84 1/3 innings into a start against the Royals in Kansas City on Friday.

Melton was placed on the injured list on September 21st with right arm fatigue and had reportedly been dealing with an “achy” arm for a few weeks. Unsurprisingly, that coincided with a major dip in production from the 25-year-old. The Tigers said that “Melton’s medical evaluation found no issues,” and he will head into the offseason as a fully healthy pitcher with a normal routine. This was Melton’s largest MLB sample yet, but he did throw 120 innings split between the minors and majors last season, so it’s at least a little concerning that his arm didn’t feel right at the end of the year. He will be a name to monitor in spring training.

It remains a bit murky regarding what exactly, if anything, is bothering Melton, which is the biggest concern from a long-term standpoint. He’s presumably headed for further evaluation and imaging to determine whether he’s dealing with any structural damage in his arm. The 25-year-old was lifted from Sunday’s start against the White Sox with a trainer in the fourth inning. He’s obviously done for the remainder of the season and finishes with an encouraging 2.76 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 94/37 K/BB ratio across 114 1/3 innings over 20 starts. He’s going to finish as a top-50 range fantasy starter, with his meteoric rise being fueled by a mechanical change that he made back in late June that led to a velocity spike. He’ll be a popular mid-round selection in drafts next spring.

Melton was charged with four runs in 3 2/3 innings against the White Sox. His very encouraging season is almost certainly over with an 8-5 record and a 2.76 ERA.
  • DET Starting Pitcher #52
Melton was just getting a visit from the pitching coach before the coach signaled to the trainer to come out, and Melton didn’t seem to make any argument to remain in the game. He allowed three runs in 3 2/3 innings versus the White Sox before departing.

Melton gave up five hits, walked four and struck out three. It was the shortest outing of his MLB career so far. Melton threw 76 pitches and was removed with the bases-loaded and two outs in the third inning. He has a 7.24 ERA in three starts in September after posting a 1.86 ERA in his first 16 starts this year. Melton is lined up to face the White Sox on the road this weekend.

It won’t qualify as one of the more aesthetically pleasing pitching lines of the season as Melton gave up seven hits, including a solo homer to Trevor Larnah in the fourth inning. He finished with just three strikeouts while issuing one walk and hitting two batters. Yet, it was still good enough for him to pick up his eighth win of the season. The 25-year-old is in line for a tasty home matchup against the Rockies to close out a two-start week on Sunday.

Melton gave up six hits, walked one and struck out four. He fell to 7-4 with the loss. Melton hadn’t allowed more than four runs in any of his 16 other starts this year. He has a 2.20 ERA. Melton is lined up to face the Guardians on the road on Sunday.

Melton didn’t walk anybody while striking out four and throwing 69 percent of his pitches for strikes. He had an 11 percent swinging strike rate in this one, but was really only missing bats with his slider. His four-seamer was down about one mph and didn’t get a single whiff on the day, which may have also been why Melton used it 19 percent less often than he normally does. Even though this was a solid outing, Melton’s last two starts have been two of his three worst starts of the season. He’s at 109 total innings on the season this year and threw over 120 last year, so he shouldn’t be tiring. With the Twins, Guardians, and Rockies up next, he should finish the season on a high note.

Melton struck out three batters in the ballgame while issuing three walks. The Royals scratched out an unearned run against him in the fourth inning, then Melton served up solo homers to Kyle Isbel in the fifth and Vinnie Pasquantino in the sixth. The 25-year-old righty got nine whiffs on 94 pitches on the night, registering a CSW of only 20 percent. He’ll look to get back in the win column as he carries a spectacular 1.60 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and a 76/28 K/BB ratio (90 innings) into Wednesday’s matchup against the Rays.

Melton struck out five and walked one while throwing 65 percent of his pitches for strikes and posting a 15 percent swinging strike rate. Melton missed plenty of bats with his four-seamer and splitter and has allowed more than one run once in a start since June 9. He’s become one of the more reliable starters in fantasy this season and has a 1.46 ERA in his 80 innings.

The 30-year-old Martin made his major league debut in September, going 0-for-2 with a walk before finishing the year on the IL with a hamstring strain.

Kevin Alcántara finished 2-for-4 with a homer, three RBI and a walk for Licey of the Dominican Winter League on Thursday.

With Seiya Suzuki and Ian Happ becoming free agents, the Cubs will have plenty of room for an out-of-options Alcántara to make an impact next year. Still, there hasn’t been anything to suggest that they have much faith in him, and there’s a decent chance he’ll be traded this winter. Alcántara hit .260/.350/.502 with 20 homers in 82 games for Triple-A Iowa last season. He’s been as productive as anyone in the Dominican Winter League so far, going 11-for-27 with three homers through eight games.

Justyn-Henry Malloy went 2-for-3 with three-run homer, five RBI and three walks in his debut for Zulia of the Venezuelan Winter League on Thursday.

That’s quite a showing for his first ever winter league appearance. Malloy, who hit .209/.311/.346 in 123 games for the Tigers between 2024 and ’25, is coming off a pretty disastrous season in the Rays system in which he missed time due to injury and hit just .167/.309/.285 in 65 games for Triple-A Durham. He’s still technically with the Rays now, but he’s about to become a minor league free agent.

Jurickson Profar went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI for La Guaira of the Venezuelan Winter League on Thursday.

Profar is 5-for-11 in three games. He obviously really needs to get some at-bats after his half-season PED ban in 2025 and full-season suspension in 2026. It’s unclear if the Braves, who have him under contract for one more year, are going to give him another shot, but if he’s released, some other team will probably pick him up for the minimum and let him play.

Victor Bericoto went 2-for-5 with a homer and three RBI for Caracas in Thursday’s Venezuelan Winter League play.

Bericoto is hitting .417 with just one strikeout over 45 plate appearances in Venezuela. Injuries prevented him from getting as long of a look from the Giants as he might have received last season, and he didn’t excel in hitting .241/.267/.420 in 116 plate appearances. However, he still has a chance to help as at least a platoon starter against lefties.

Marlins sent RHP Tyler Zuber, RHP Zach Brzykcy, RHP Wikelman González, C Brian Navarreto and C Logan Driscoll outright to Triple-A Jacksonville.

Zuber recently underwent internal brace surgery that could keep him out for all of next year. Navarreto spent the final three-plus months of the season on the roster as a backup to Joe Mack, but he didn’t play much, hitting .135/.193/.250 in 61 plate appearances.

Marlins exercised RHP Sandy Alcantara’s club option for 2027.

Alcantara will make $21 million, plus an extra $1 million if he’s traded at any point, in the final year of his deal with the Marlins. The 31-year-old went 13-11 with a 3.87 ERA while leading the majors with 214 innings pitched last season. On the other hand, both his 17 percent strikeout rate and his 42 percent groundball rate were career lows. His value in fantasy leagues next year will rather significantly hinge on whether the Marlins continue to give him chances to close games in between starts.

Nick Martinez is declining his half of a $20 million mutual option to stay with the Rays.

Like most mutual options, this wasn’t designed to be exercised. Martinez will get a $4 million buyout and return to free agency after a stellar 2026 that saw him go 15-6 with a 3.10 ERA and make his first All-Star team.

Arjun Nimmala went 5-for-7 with a two-run homer and a double in Mesa’s 21-5 win in the Arizona Fall League on Thursday.

After a really nice finish for Double-A Rocket City, Nimmala has hit .300/.447/.533 with two homers and four steals in four tries in the Arizona Fall League. He’s yet to play anywhere other than shortstop in the minors, but that will probably change early next year if the Angels hold on to Zach Neto.

Sebastian Walcott went 3-for-6 with a double and five RBI in the Saguaros 17-5 win over the Scorpions in Thursday’s Arizona Fall League play.

Walcott’s .300/.362/.460 line in Arizona isn’t much better than the league average, but it’s still encouraging from a 20-year-old who missed most of 2026. He also picked up his ninth steal in 10 tries Thursday.
