Marlins option Deyvison De Los Santos to Triple-A

The 23-year-old has a .333/.333/.444 line in nine plate appearances with the Marlins this year. He doesn’t figure to come into immediate everyday playing time but perhaps he can find his way into the lineup if the Marlins drift out of the NL Wild Card race.

This is a surprise, as there hadn’t really been any news on Stowers since he went on the IL with a hamstring strain on Aug. 11. Deyvison De Los Santos will return to Triple-A to make room for Stowers. Agustín Ramírez will likely lose some playing time.

De Los Santos sipped a couple cups of coffee with Miami earlier this season, but hasn’t been able to carve out a permanent role at the highest level. The 23-year-old slugging prospect’s fantasy stock has tumbled since arriving in Miami as part of the A.J. Puk trade a couple years ago. He’s still capable of launching the occasional long ball and has showed more stolen base upside than previously expected with 18 homers and 17 steals in 95 games at the Triple-A level this season. He’s an interesting talent, but hardly worth rostering outside of extremely deep mixed leagues at the moment.

De Los Santos has been up and down twice already this season, and it probably won’t be the last. The Marlins will activate Kyle Stowers off the injured list before Sunday’s game as the corresponding move.

We’ll see if De Los Santos can crack the Marlins lineup in his second stint with the club in the last couple weeks. He’s not in the lineup tonight as Javier Sanoja handles left field with a righty on the mound. Until then, he’s a speculative pickup at best and probably is someone fantasy managers should monitor rather than rush to the waiver wire for.

That augurs badly for Griffin Conine’s knee, in theory. De Los Santos was briefly called up in March before the Marlins claimed Leo Jimenez off waivers. It’s possible he’ll get real playing time for the Marlins, but fantasy managers should probably take a wait-and-see approach.

De Los Santos was called up this weekend when Christopher Morel (oblique) went on the IL, and it was thought that he might be in Miami to stay. That was not the case. The team claimed INF Leo Jimenez off waivers and will activate him while sending De Los Santos to the minors, where he can play every day. In the meantime, Connor Norby is expected to be the regular first baseman for the Marlins, with Javier Sanoja and Graham Pauley playing third base.

It’ll go down as a moderate oblique strain for Morel, who suffered the injury at some point prior to Friday’s season opener against the Rockies, and will likely be out until at least early May. The 26-year-old was expected to open the year as Miami’s starting first baseman after signing a one-year deal in the offseason. It’ll be a combination of Connor Norby and Deyvison De Los Santos splitting time at the cold corner during his absence.

The move is now official. De Los Santos will see time at first base for the Marlins with Christopher Morel likely facing a multi-week absence with an oblique strain. The power-hitting 22-year-old’s fantasy stock tumbled last year when he managed just 12 homers in 106 games at the Triple-A level following a 40-homer campaign in the upper minors back in 2024. The massive over-the-fence power remains firmly intact but he’s going to strike out a fair amount, especially as he faces big-league arms for the first time. There’s enough power potential to make De Los Santos interesting in deeper mixed leagues, but a wait-and-see approach feels right in shallow mixers.
