Pirates placed RHP Kirby Yates on the 15-day injured list with a right shoulder impingement.

Yates, who had a 2.19 ERA in 13 games since being acquired by the Pirates on August 3, will miss at least a few weeks. Shoulder injuries for a pitcher aren’t good. The 39-year-old has been a stabilizing force in the pen and will now yield his spot to Khristian Curtis.

Both starters in the Detroit-Pittsburgh game are hanging it up, and while Justin Verlander will someday be elected to Cooperstown, Yates had a heck of a career as well. He made that first start of his long career at the age of 39 on Saturday, and he finishes with a 3.35 ERA and 101 saves in his 518 appearances.

It sure felt like the final moment of Yates’ career when he tipped his cap to the crowd following a heartfelt send-off from his teammates after a scoreless outing in his first-ever start. The 39-year-old right-hander has spent time with eight different organizations since 2014, posting a 3.35 ERA along with 101 saves in 518 appearances during that span.

The 39-year-old Yates, out since Sept. 3 with a shoulder impingement, will get a chance to finish out the season and maybe his career on the active roster. He has a nice 3.40 ERA in 39 2/3 innings for the Angels and Pirates this year, but he is weighing retirement.
  • PIT Relief Pitcher #39
Yates heads to Pittsburgh as a reliable late-inning option as they attempt to make a late-season playoff push. The 39-year-old veteran has notched three saves this season along with a respectable 3.95 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 36/12 K/BB ratio across 27 1/3 innings of work.

Yates came on with a 1-0 lead to protect. The 39-year-old hurler made things interesting by plunking Dillon Dingler to open the ninth inning. He then battled back to get Spencer Torkelson on a fly ball to left field before James Outman swiped second base to put the tying run in scoring position. Yates then walked Riley Greene before getting Kerry Carpenter on a fly ball to left field for the second out. Hao-Yu Lee followed with a two-run double that gave the Tigers their first lead of the day and put Yates in position for a loss.
  • LAA Relief Pitcher #39
It’s been a bit difficult for Yates to get in a groove since very few save opportunities come up for the Angels. Still, he locked this one down and has only allowed one run over his last 12 appearances. It’s been easy to overlook that he’s actually having a fine season with a 3.00 ERA across 24 appearances, but just three saves.
  • LAA Relief Pitcher #39
Yates came into a tie game in the ninth and gave up a groundball single, a sac bunt and then a long single off the wall in left to end the game. It was a tough break for a reliever who has been very good of late with little to show for it. It was the first run he’d allowed since June 22 and the first earned run since June 8. He’s still a candidate for saves in the Angels’ pen, though he has earned just two so far.
  • LAA Relief Pitcher #39
The 39-year-old Yates had 41 saves for the Padres in 2019, 33 for the Rangers in 2024 and now 26 in his other 10 seasons as a big leaguer. He should stay in the mix for saves in Anaheim, but his velocity is down 1.5-2 mph from last year and about three mph from his prime, making him difficult to rely on.
  • LAA Relief Pitcher #39
Yates was pitching with the Angels down 6-0 in the ninth, so this was hardly a crucial appearance for the 39-year-old. Still, it was nice to see him average 91 mph with his fastball for just the second time this season and fan three batters for the first time. His average fastball tonight was still down 1.7 mph from last year, and there’s little reason to expect big things going forward. However, there’s no one in the Angels pen who is clearly a better bet than Yates at the moment.

Brought in with a 4-3 lead, Yates blew the save after Jeremy Peña singled, stole second base and scored on a Christian Walker single. After the game, manager Kurt Suzuki said Yates was closing tonight because that’s what the Angels signed him to do in the offseason, which was pretty amusing because Suzuki made no such claim while declaring the ninth an open competition this spring. Signing Yates didn’t seem like such a bad idea then, but his velocity has been down about two mph from last year. Maybe he’ll get a little better than his current 5.23 ERA, but it’s hard to be overly optimistic.

Athletics declined 2B Jeff McNeil’s club option for 2027.

The option was for $15.75 million and never really had any chance of being picked up. The Mets will be on the hook for his $2 million buyout under the terms of the deal that send him to the A’s last winter. Even with a strong second half, McNeil hit a modest .264/.313/.368 last season. He’ll most likely land a starting job in free agency, but at this point, it’s questionable whether he has the glove for second or the bat to help at first or in left.

Athletics declined LHP Jeffrey Springs’ club option for 2027.

The A’s held a $15 million option with a $750,000 buyout under the terms of the four-year, $31 million deal Spring signed with the Rays prior to the 2023 season. Springs’ strikeout rate collapsed immediately after the A’s picked him up two years ago, and he had a 6.18 ERA last season, giving up 35 homers in 142 2/3 innings.

Michael Arroyo underwent elbow surgery Wednesday to “clean up cartilage and brace a chronic injury to his UCL,” according to the Mariners.

The announcement says Arroyo will return to game action in April. Given that this seems to be internal brace surgery, Arroyo might be limited to DHing for a while into his return from surgery. Arroyo, who turns 22 next week, made his MLB debut in September and hit .371/.439/.514 in 15 games. That was going to put him in position to challenge for a spot next spring, though there was a good chance he’d open in Triple-A. Now it seems like he won’t be an option until May or maybe June.

The Mariners are hiring CJ Gillman as their hitting coach, according to The Athletic.

Hiring a hitting coach before hiring a manager is a little odd, but the Mariners obviously wanted Gillman back. He was employed by the team as a minor league hitting coordinator from 2022-25 before spending last season as the Nationals’ director of hitting.

Twins declined 1B Josh Bell’s mutual option for 2027.

Bell gets a $1.25 million buyout from the $10 million option. The Twins paid him a total of $7 million for his .255/.319/.419 line and 96 RBI last season, and they might have some interest in re-signing him for a similar amount. However, if they see Byron Buxton doing a lot of DHing next year, that would leave less room for Bell.

Orioles declined RHP Zach Eflin’s mutual option for 2027.

Eflin will receive a $2 million buyout on the $25 million mutual option. He underwent Tommy John surgery in April and is hoping to be ready in the early part of next season. He’s indicated that he’d like to stay with Baltimore.

Orioles agreed to terms with OF Rece Hinds on a one-year contract.

Hinds hit .179/.273/.250 in 12 games for Baltimore late in the year. The Orioles will probably wind up waiving Hinds in the near future, but some guaranteed money in the deal would make it more likely that he clears waivers and sticks around as a non-roster player. They did something similar with infielder Luis Vázquez and reliever Josh Walker last winter.

The Twins are declining their half of Joe Ryan’s $13 million mutual option for 2027.

The option was just something Ryan and the Twins did in January in order to avoid arbitration; Ryan gets a $100,000 buyout on top of his $6.1 million salary from last season, and now he’ll be arbitration eligible again. Coming off a season in which he had a 3.79 ERA in 27 starts, he’s probably looking at a raise to $9 million-$10 million in his final season before free agency.

Angels declined RHP Robert Stephenson’s club option for 2027.

Stephenson’s three-year, $33 million deal with the Angels gave the team some protection due to injury in the form of a $2.5 million option for 2028 if he missed a certain amount of time. However, the Angels decided against bringing him back even at that greatly reduced rate as he rehabs from April surgery to repair his UCL and flexor tendon. Stephenson, signed after a breakthrough stint with the Rays in 2023, pitched just 10 innings for the Angels, all of them in 2025.

Sonny Gray became a free agent Friday after declining his mutual option with the Red Sox.

Gray gets a $10 million buyout for declining the option, so this was always the way it was going to go down. The Red Sox figure to have considerable interest in bringing him back, but he’ll be very popular around the league.
