According to Alex Speier of the Boston Globe, Sonny Gray plans to continue pitching in 2027.

There had been some rumblings that the 37-year-old hurler was mulling retirement but ultimately, it became a relatively easy decision. Gray noted, “My family and I have talked about it and it’s an easy decision... I still want to win a World Series, whether that is [with] Boston or with whoever wants me.” He’s expected to decline his side of his $30 million mutual option with the Red Sox and should be very highly sought after in free agency this winter.
Pabst: Ohtani's future is as a hitter only
Paul Pabst pleads his warm take to Andrew Perloff that despite Shohei Ohtani being a great hitter and a good pitcher, that the LA Dodger should stick to hitting only, and if he does his legacy will be 'just fine'.

Gray seems to have plenty left in the tank as he approaches his 37th birthday in November, but it’s not the first time he’s hinted that he doesn’t see himself going the Justin Verlander route. He was also especially frustrated with the way his final start ended, suggesting that manager Chad Tracy should have trusted him to get more outs instead of pulling him in the fifth. “I don’t know what the future holds for me,” Gray said. “I do know that I walked off that mound with my chest back and my chin up, and I can definitely be proud that I left it all out there until the ball was taken out of my hands.” Gray will be eligible for free agency this winter, likely by opting out of his contract after the Red Sox pick up their portion of a $30 million option.

Gray kept his former team off the scoreboard until the fourth inning when Luis García Jr. tagged him for a classic Yankee Stadium solo homer into the right-field seats. He was pulled with two outs in the fifth at just 70 pitches with Red Sox manager Chad Tracy turning to Erik Miller to face Cody Bellinger with a pair of runners on-base. The move wound up backfiring for the second consecutive game in the series as Miller immediately surrendered an RBI single to extend New York’s lead. The 36-year-old impending free agent heads to the open market after compiling a 2.72 ERA and 149/46 K/BB ratio across 169 innings during his lone season with the Red Sox.

Sonny Gray will start Game 2, with Ranger Suarez potentially lined up for Game 3. It seems that Tracy may be looking to break up his lefties. Tolle is certainly a worthwhile Game 1 starter. He finished the regular season with a 3.03 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, and 28.4 percent strikeout rate across 148 2/3 innings. He has never made a start in the postseason before, while Gray has previous experience. Gray also posted a 2.72 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, and 21.8 percent strikeout rate in 169 innings this year. Either way, the Red Sox have a nice duo set up to start the first two games of the series.

Playoff ready, Gray was in the proverbial rocking chair during this start. It was the ninth time in his last 10 starts completing at least six innings and the Guardians barely threatened against him. An excellent finale to a stellar regular season, Gray finishes with a 2.72 ERA, 149 strikeouts, and 46 walks across 169 innings. The next time he’ll take the mound will be in the Bronx against the Yankees in the Wild Card round.

Gray struck out six batters in the contest while issuing three free passes. He served up a solo homer to Josh Jung in the opening inning, then allowed the Rangers to scratch out a pair of runs in the second inning. He kept them off the board the rest of the way though, affording his club the opportunity to come back. Gray generated 16 swings and misses on 102 offerings in the game — six on his sweeper — while posting a CSW of 25 percent. He’ll head into his final start of the regular season against the Guardians on Wednesday with a 17-5 record, 2.82 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and a 146/45 K/BB ratio over 163 innings on the season.

Gray allowed a leadoff double to Carter Jensen to start the game, with Jensen coming around to score on a two-out RBI single by Salvador Perez two batters later. Gray would get out of the inning and pitch a scoreless second inning, but gave up two more runs in the third inning on an RBI double by Carter Jensen and an RBI single by Vinnie Pasquantino later in the inning. Gray wouldn’t allow another run the rest of the night, but the damage had been done, and the Red Sox couldn’t muster enough run support to pick up the much-needed win. Gray will hope for better results in his next start, which is scheduled for Thursday on the road against the Rangers.

The Red Sox have some extra flexibility with off days coming up Thursday and Monday. Gray got to pitch on nine days’ rest last time through. Now, Suarez, who pitched seven scoreless innings against Baltimore last time out, will get eight days in between starts, with Gray working on five days’ rest.

The nine days’ rest did Gray well on Saturday as he dominated the Orioles over seven shutout innings on his way to a win. He scattered just three hits and issued three walks while collecting seven strikeouts. The 36-year-old right-hander ends the day with a 2.69 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and a 135/40 K/BB ratio across 150 2/3 innings. He’s currently lined up for a start against the Royals in Boston on Friday.

Gray’s velocity was down slightly last Wednesday against the Marlins, and while the Red Sox aren’t committing to a specific injury here, they’re giving him several extra days between starts. The Red Sox figure to call up someone to replace him Tuesday when rosters expand, though they’re lacking options.

The swings-and-misses were certainly there for Gray in this start. He forced 15 whiffs in total with at least one coming against all six of his pitches, multiple with four, and six total off his sweeper. On the other hand, his cutter was hit incredibly hard – three of the four put in play off it were hard-hit – and he had to scrap that pitch after a few innings. That forced him to chase those whiffs more, led to a bit of inefficiency, and was partially why he only lasted five innings. He’s scheduled for a two-start week coming up against the Mariners and Orioles.

Jake Bauers hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the seventh inning as the Brewers topped the Dodgers 6-2 in Game 3 of the NLCS on Wednesday.

Bauers had another long at-bat that saw him foul off several middle-middle pitches before pulverizing a 3-2 cookie from Blake Snell to give the Brewers the 3-2 lead. The 31-year-old veteran has his first homer of the postseason, but he’s been excellent in the playoffs thus far while driving in three runs. Bauers and the Brewers are now one win away from their first trip to the World Series as a National League team, and can reach that accomplishment with a win Thursday in Game 4.

Will Smith hit a two-run double in a Game 3 of the NLCS loss to the Brewers on Wednesday.

Smith gave the Dodgers a 2-1 lead with a bases-loaded double in the sixth inning off Abner Uribe. It’d be the last run of the night for Los Angeles, and the defending champions are now a loss away from their season coming to a close. Smith has been awful in this postseason, and even with the two-run double he’s hitting just .074 over the first seven games.

Cooper Pratt went 3-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored in a win over the Dodgers on Wednesday in Game 3 of the NLCS.

Pratt singled all three times. The steal was the first of the postseason for the 22-year-old, who has hit .360 with a .400 slugging percentage in his first postseason. He’ll assuredly be in the lineup Thursday wit a chance for the Brewers to clinch a trip to the World Series versus the Rays or Guardians.

Jackson Chourio hit a leadoff homer as the Brewers topped the Dodgers on Wednesday in Game 3 of the NLCS.

Chourio blistered a solo homer the opposite way to give the Brew Crew an early 1-0 lead. The 22-year-old has his second homer of the postseason, and he’s driven in seven runs even while hitting at the top of the lineup for the entirety of the playoffs.

Trevor Megill went the final 1 1/3 innings and earned a save Wednesday in Game 3 of the NLCS against the Dodgers.

Megill came in and got Will Smith to fly out with a runner on to end the eighth. He was able to retire the side in order in the ninth, and even with a four-run lead, thanks to a run in the ninth, he’s credited with his fourth save of the postseason.

Blake Snell allowed four runs in six-plus innings with nine strikeouts in a loss to the Brewers in Game 5 of the NLCS for the Dodgers on Wednesday.

Snell allowed a leadoff homer to Jackson Chourio, and after that, the left-hander was dominant for the next five innings. And then, the seventh happened. He walked Andrew Vaughn, allowed a two-run homer to Jake Bauers and a solo homer to Garrett Mitchell without recording an out to turn what was an outstanding effort into a middling one. Justice for Kevin Cash? Snell would likely get the start in Game 7 if the Dodgers can force one, but there’s a pretty good chance his season is over.

Robert Gasser didn’t give up a run in his five innings of work during Game 3 of the NLCS against the Dodgers on Wednesday.

Gasser allowed just three hits and a walk, and he struck out three. He threw 47-of-72 pitches for strikes, and it was a little surprising that the Brewers pulled the southpaw only to see Abner Uribe allow two runs while getting just one out after Gasser left. Milwaukee still was able to get the win, however, and has a commanding 3-0 lead in the series. The 27-year-old could get a start in Game 6 or 7 if necessary, or could be a bullpen option in the coming days.

The Phillies will not bring back hitting coach Kevin Long or infield coach Bobby Dickerson, sources told NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Jim Salisbury.

Long spent five years as the Phillies’ hitting coach after previous tenures with the Yankees, Mets and Nationals. Dickerson had also held his spot the last five years and six years overall; the Phillies made him their infield coach in 2019, lost him to San Diego for two years and then brought him back in 2022.

The Brewers have Andrew Vaughn batting cleanup and Christian Yelich out of the lineup for NLCS Game 3 against the Dodgers.

With a lefty back on the mound in Blake Snell, the Brewers are using the same nine they did in Game 1 versus Tarik Skubal. The lineup: LF Jackson Chourio, 2B Brice Turang, C William Contreras, DH Vaughn, 1B Jake Bauers, CF Garrett Mitchell, SS Cooper Pratt, RF Luis Lara, 3B Joey Ortiz.

After four straight games of batting eighth, Kyle Tucker has been inserted into the cleanup spot for Game 3 against the Brewers.

Tucker hadn’t hit higher than sixth in the postseason. Tonight, Shohei Ohtani has been dropped to sixth, and Max Muncy is sitting initially against left-hander Robert Gasser. The lineup: SS Mookie Betts, 1B Freddie Freeman, LF Teoscar Hernández, RF Tucker, CF Andy Pages, DH Ohtani, C Will Smith, 3B Miguel Rojas, 2B Tommy Edman.
