White Sox released OF Dwight Smith Jr.
Smith Jr. signed a minor league contract back in February and has been released after hitting .236/.300/.327 with one homer in 60 plate appearances at Triple-A Charlotte. The 29-year-old former top prospect last appeared in the majors with the Orioles during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.

Orioles optioned RHP Cameron Weston to Triple-A Norfolk.
The 25-year-old hurler was promoted from Triple-A prior to Thursday’s game. He made his big league debut in that contest, striking out one batter in his scoreless inning of work. Weston should get another opportunity with the O’s before the summer is through.

James Schiano discusses what the long-awaited return of right-handed pitcher Jared Jones means for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
  • BAL Relief Pitcher #49
Orioles re-signed RHP Albert Suárez to a one-year contract.
Once again, the 36-year-old hurler re-signs with the O’s after being designated for assignment. He has pitched well in seven appearances with the club this season, posting a 2.75 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and a 10/9 K/BB ratio across 19 2/3 innings. Cameron Weston was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk in a corresponding move.
  • TB Relief Pitcher #63
Edwin Uceta (shoulder) suffered another setback in his throwing progression and has been shut down once more.
It’s another discouraging development for the 28-year-old right-hander who is trying to return from a shoulder impingement that has bothered him since the spring. There’s no clear timeline for when he may be able to join the Rays’ bullpen, but it’s going to be a while.
  • BOS 3rd Baseman #20
Nick Sogard isn’t in the starting lineup for Boston’s Friday game against the Guardians.
Caleb Durbin will bat ninth as Sogard sits for the first time in the last six games against RHP Slade Cecconi. Sogard is off to a .273/.368/.394 start and figures to keep getting chances so long as Durbin remains ice cold.
  • CWS Relief Pitcher #40
White Sox recalled LHP Tyler Gilbert from Triple-A Charlotte.
Gilbert was blown up in two appearances with the White Sox this year, but holds a 3.09 ERA in 23 1/3 innings with the Knights, including 21 strikeouts against just five walks. He’ll get another chance to establish himself in the White Sox bullpen pecking order while Jordan Leasure is out.
  • CWS Relief Pitcher #49
White Sox placed RHP Jordan Leasure on the 15-day injured list with a right flexor strain.
Leasure had a 6.27 ERA in 18 2/3 innings for the White Sox this year, struggling again even after a demotion last weekend. He’ll try to get right on the injured list.
  • TB Shortstop #6
Taylor Walls (hamstring) is not in Friday’s lineup for the Rays as they take on the Angels.
It’s his third straight day on the bench since he was scratched with hamstring tightness ahead of Tuesday’s game. Ben Williamson is starting at shortstop against RHP Walbert Ureña.
  • CLE Center Fielder #20
Guardians selected the contract of Stuart Fairchild from Triple-A Columbus.
Fairchild was hitting .289/.417/.479 in 176 plate appearances at Columbus after a nice WBC with Chinese Taipei. He could figure in as a short-side platoon bat for the Guardians with Daniel Schneeman handling the strong side while Steven Kwan is on the bereavement list.
  • CLE Shortstop #13
Guardians transferred Gabriel Arias from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day injured list.
This is procedural, as Arias has been out since April 7. Arias would be eligible to return in a week, but in an earlier update this morning we noted that Guardians manager Steven Vogt indicated he’d be out longer than this and has yet to begun a ramp-up. His timeline probably is going to be closer to late June or early July at this point.
  • STL Left Fielder #17
Cardinals selected the contract of Nelson Velázquez from Triple-A Memphis.
It’s unclear if Velázquez will actually hold a major role with the Cardinals, but with Nathan Church and Lars Nootbar both still on the injured list, he may have some short-term value in deeper leagues. He’s batting cleanup tonight in his Cardinals debut against LHP Shota Imanaga. Velázquez was hitting .232/.344/.420 with Triple-A Memphis, with seven homers and four stolen bases.
