Simmons signed a one-year, $4 million contract with the Cubs last offseason and wound up hitting just .173/.244/.187 with four steals in 85 plate appearances. The 32-year-old defensive wizard, who just wrapped up a minor league rehab assignment coming back from a right shoulder strain, has been limited to just 34 games this season due to numerous injuries. Given his defensive prowess, he could easily latch on with a contender as a potential late-inning defensive specialist.

This is very good to see, at least for those still holding on to Bohm. He had just four extra-base hits in 141 plate appearances this season before adding three to the ledger tonight and raising his OPS from .433 to .518. It’s his fifth career two-homer game and first since Apr. 19, 2024. It’s his first ever with three extra-base hits.

Nola was pulled with two on and two outs in the fifth, even though the Phillies had a three-run lead. They just didn’t trust him to retire Troy Johnston in that situation. Nola remains 2-3 with a 5.14 ERA and a 44/15 K/BB in 42 innings. He figures to make his next start Friday in Pittsburgh, but he isn’t really an option outside of NL-only leagues right now.

Freeland surrendered 10 hits with his velocity down about one mph from his season average. It’s the second time in his career that he’s both given up three homers and 10 hits in a contest. He’ll take a 1-4 record and a 6.00 ERA into his next start at home against Colorado.

Turner had as many hits today as he totaled in his previous 32 at-bats this month. The stolen base was also his first since Apr. 21. He’s been quite a disappointment thus far, but it’s not like he’s a stranger to slow starts. His two lowest career OPSs by month are .737 in May and .781 in April. He’s come in at .880 in September and .872 in August.

Carpenter was hurt running into the side wall on Bobby Witt Jr.'s inside-the-park homer and is probably going to be day-to-day. It might be best if he DH’s a little bit, opening up some more starts for Wenceel Pérez.

Lauer has gotten to start his last three times out after complaining about the bulk role following an Apr. 17 outing, but not against the Angels. Lauer has a 1-3 record with a 6.15 ERA in his six starts this year.

Presumably, that would begin on May 19. It wouldn’t be surprising it if also ends on May 19. The Mariners don’t want to disrespect Castillo, but the 33-year-old only held it together last year because of his home ballpark and that still hasn’t been enough this season with his career-worst 19 percent strikeout rate and 33 percent groundball rate. He has a 6.29 ERA through seven starts. At least this arrangement is good for Emerson Hancock, who no longer has to worry about his spot. Miller still figures to be quite useful in the long run.

That’s all Boston has announced so far. Brayan Bello was slated to start Sunday, but since the club has Monday off, it’s possible he could be pushed back further than Tuesday.

Stowers broke out with his best game at the plate, starting with a double in the first inning. He then took Zack Littell deep for a two-run blast in the fourth for his first home run of the season. Stowers later added a single and a run scored in the eighth. The 28-year-old slugger is hitting .239/.320/.343 with one homer, ten runs scored, and three RBI across 75 plate appearances.
