Mets signed RHP Connor Overton to a minor league contract.

Overton didn’t pitch in the big leagues last year after posting a respectable 4.85 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 38/23 K/BB ratio across 59 1/3 innings (18 appearances, 10 starts) from 2021-2023 between the Reds, Pirates and Blue Jays. The 31-year-old righty has some starting experience and has also pitched in relief, so he brings some added versatility to the Mets’ organizational depth at Triple-A Syracuse.

Jonah Tong allowed four runs on five hits in 4 2/3 innings in a loss to the Phillies on Sunday.

Tong struck out five but walked four and threw just 61 percent of his pitches for strikes. He did post an 11 percent swinging strike rate, and all of his four-seamer, cutter, and curve showed the ability to miss bats. However, Tong fell behind in the count far too often due to four-seam command. He’s set up for another start next week against the Nationals, but his command issues will make him a risky fantasy option.

Alex Bregman was taken to the hospital after taking a foul ball off his left cheek while in the on-deck circle Sunday.

Bregman, who had a cut and a bloody nose, is undergoing tests to see if any bones were broken. If he’s going to miss some time, the Cubs figure to use Matt Shaw and Pedro Ramírez at third base.

Cristopher Sánchez allowed two runs on six hits in 6 1/3 innings in a win over the Mets on Sunday.

Sánchez threw 72 percent of his pitches for strikes, registering a 10 percent swinging strike rate and 32 percent CSW while striking out six and walking nobody. It was a textbook day for the left-hander, who pounded the zone with his sinker and slider and missed plenty of bats with his changeup. He’ll take a 2.93 ERA into a start with the Rays next week as he tries to cap off another great season.

After three straight days off, Jake Bauers is back at first base Sunday night against the Orioles.

Bauers was one of a few regulars to sit Thursday after the Brewers clinched the NL Central, but he was also out of the lineup Friday and Saturday off against lefties, though he did get three plate appearances off the bench on Friday. He’s batting cleanup tonight.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. left Sunday’s game with lower back tightness, the Blue Jays said.

He’ll probably want to get back out there Monday, but it’s easy to imagine Guerrero getting shut down if the Blue Jays are eliminated from contention sometime this week.

The ball bounced after a checked swing from Michael Busch and caught Bregman just under the bill of his helmet. Matt Shaw took over at third base.
