Poteet gives Baltimore some additional long relief depth over the next couple days. The 30-year-old righty was acquired from the Cubs back in late March after failing to make Chicago’s season-opening roster following his inclusion in the offseason Cody Bellinger trade with the Yankees.

Yankees signed 1B Paul Goldschmidt to a one-year, $4 million contract.

Clarke Schmidt went on the 60-day IL to open up a spot. Goldschmidt joined the Yankees as their starting first baseman last year, but he’ll mostly be asked to play against lefties this season after faring far better against them than righties last season. Ben Rice will surely lose a few at-bats as a result of the move, but it seems like Austin Wells might fare worse with Rice set to do some catching this year.

Yankees placed RHP Clarke Schmidt on the 60-day injured list following internal brace surgery.

Schmidt might return down the stretch after undergoing surgery late last July, though it might be late enough that he’s only considered as a reliever. The 29-year-old had a nice 3.32 ERA in 14 starts before getting hurt last season.

Chris Paddack

MIA Starting Pitcher #40
Marlins signed RHP Chris Paddack to a one-year, $4 million contract.

Paddack would seem to be more interesting as a reliever at this point, but it sounds like he’ll be the favorite to open up as the Marlins’ fifth starter over Janson Junk, Ryan Gusto and others. The 30-year-old Paddack had a 5.35 ERA and a poor 16.7% strikeout rate in 28 starts and five relief appearances for the Twins and Tigers last season. In 441 innings since 2020, his ERA stands at 5.06.

Ronny Henriquez

MIA Pitcher #32

Marlins placed RHP Ronny Henríquez on the 60-day injured list following elbow surgery.

Henríquez underwent internal brace surgery in December and is slated to miss the 2026 season, though he should be ready to go in 2027. He looked like a potential closer last season, amassing a 2.25 ERA with a 98/27 K/BB in 73 innings.

MLB owners voted Thursday to enforce a rule keeping first and third base coaches in their respective boxes until the pitch is thrown.

It’s already the rule in the books, but enforcement of it is very scarce, and especially lately, coaches seem to be trying to get a little closer to the action in order to identify pitch tipping and potentially signal hitters. Coaches will first get a warning for any infractions and then are subject to ejection afterwards.

Jackson Holliday

Jackson Holliday underwent surgery Thursday to remove the broken hamate bone from his right wrist.

For reasons that weren’t exactly clear, the Orioles were especially quick to rule out Holliday for Opening Day as a result of the injury he suffered while hitting last Thursday. It sounds like they expect him to miss much of April, which should lead to Blaze Alexander starting at second or perhaps Coby Mayo playing third while Jordan Westburg slides over to second.

Zac Gallen

FA Starting Pitcher #23
According to John Gambadoro of 98.7 FM in Phoenix, the Diamondbacks are still exploring creative ways to bring back free agent right-hander Zac Gallen.

Gambadoro notes that all is quiet on the free agent market for Gallen at the moment, which is a bit surprising considering how quickly the rest of the remaining starting pitchers have signed deals with spring camps opening around the league. The Cubs were linked to him in mid-January, but those talks seem to have fizzled. The 30-year-old hurler is the top remaining pitcher out there on the open market, so any team still looking to make a splash addition to their rotation should be interested.

Nick Castellanos

PHI Outfield #8

Phillies released OF Nick Castellanos.

The Phillies had been trying to trade the 33-year-old outfielder in order to get some cost savings on the $20 million that he’s owed for 2026, but finding no takers it sounds like they’ll just part ways instead. Castellanos hit .250/.294/.400 with 17 homers, 72 RBI and four stolen bases in 589 plate appearances during the 2025 season. It shouldn’t take him long to find work elsewhere, especially with the Phillies picking up the tab on his salary.

Evan Phillips

LAD Relief Pitcher #59

Dodgers placed RHP Evan Phillips on the 60-day injured list.

The 31-year-old right-hander continues to progress in his recovery from Tommy John surgery, but he’s expected to be out until at least July, which means that this move was inevitable. He should be able to provide an already stacked Dodgers’ bullpen with a boost for the second half of the 2026 season.

Dodgers re-signed INF/OF Kiké Hernández to a one-year, $4.5 million contract.

It seemed like an inevitability that Hernández would once again wind up back with the Dodgers. The 34-year-old utilityman is set to serve in his customary bench role and will be deployed primarily against left-handed pitchers. He can be ignored for fantasy purposes.
